taking motorcycle to Lao

I live in Udon Thani (North Eastern Thailand) I want to take my bike on a 2 week trip around Lao.I have identified my border crossing point, what I am unsure about is the actual paperwork required by Lao Customs,I have a registration book for my bike which I purchased new from a Thai dealer, but I read stuff about carnets (almost like a passport for the bike being required) The other thing I would appreciate some help with is insurance, third party cover is essential for driving in Lao.However the reccomended Lao company have a website which does not allow one to purchase said insurance.

I would appreciate any input from members with any knowledge on this subject

no carnet needed

I assume you have Thai number plates since you bought the bike in Thailand.

In that case you can organise everything you need at the border, temporary importation and insurance. You don't need a carnet (CDP) if your only going into neighbouring Laos.

For more information you might also want to check the GT Rider forum

Laos is great! :thumbup1: Enjoy the trip.

Thanks

Hi Turbo Charger,

Just a quick word of thanks.I just received a reply from the Lao insurance company which is featured by GT rider, and they inform I can buy in Udon where I live, however if I can get it at the border then that makes more sense as I will know for sure the trip is happening, rather than purchasing ot for a specified date and finding that in fact I am denied entry.

Thanks again,

Martin
