Ed - just occured to me that you guys might be refering to ship (as in boat) rather than ship (the verb). I used SA Airways for the bike and myself. Just drove the bike onto a pallet. Didn't even need to take anything off it. £600.

Airfreight from Cape Town to London Heathrow Two approaches:

• Deal direct with SAA
  • High rate, but charged on weight, not volumetric weight
  • No need to strip bike
  • Dealt with Airline directly
  • High charges on arrival in UK
• Freight forwarders via Virgin Atlantic
  • Bike was stripped down to get volumetric weight down to less than actual weight
  • Forwarders did make mistakes
  • Lower charges on arrival
  • Cheaper over all

You find a pallet or get a local company to bring one to the airport (the same people as in example2 below, in fact). Strap on the bike (whole) and make sure you get someone to do the dangerous goods declaration BEFORE you get on a plane anywhere!

OR...

Talk to Bradly from MMA
0842092586 (not sure if it's still the same number). Email me if not.
He will arrange pallet and transport to the airport for the bikes. The advantage here is that you can take the bike apart and lower it's Volumetric-weight, thus paying slightly less.

OR..

Pitch up at the Cargo Centre at the Airport. Ask someone for the number of a freight forwarder and call them. Be prepared to haggle.
