Shipping USA to Australia

Hi, I'm 3 months into a 'civilized' RTW http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif - that is, I expect to spend another 6 months (until the end of Oct) in the USA, before moving on. I have my own, UK registered GS Adv with me.
My original plan was to move on to NZ for 3 months or so, then ship to Australia for 3-6 months, or until the money ran out http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif
I'm now having second thoughts about the NZ trip - don't get me wrong - I still want to go - it's just that I've got a feeling that it's going to be more cost effective to crate the bike and send it to Oz, then fly out to NZ, hire a bike for a month or so, then fly on to Oz & meet the bike.

Any thoughts anybody? Any ideas of 'ball park' figures for crating & shipping? Or of bike hire costs in NZ? I'd really like to take the Adv for the whole trip - but if it costs me the equivalent of a couple of months travel to do so, then I may look at the alternative.

All advice/experience appreciated...

Hi Mike,

I just shipped my BMW from Denver to Sydney by air using Berklay Cargo (www.berklay.com). I crated the motorcycle myself here in Denver. The total cost from Berklay was about $2,500, including about $700 for ground transportation from Denver to NY. I think Berklay quoted me around $1,400 to ship the bike to Sydney via ocean (including the ground transportation). My crate with my loaded BMW weighed about 1,000 pounds.

Those prices are somewhat steep, but Berklay knows their stuff and the bike was delivered to Sydney without a hitch in about 10 days.

Just a data point that might be useful.

For info on shipping check out the shipping page on the left. Note that it's probably the same price to fly your bike NZ-Oz as to ship. It's certainly less hassle.

Instead of renting you may want to try this:

Try searching here for bike hire: www.searchnz.co.nz
