Cheapest way for me and bike LaosThailand to India/Nepal

I'm planning on going from Vietnam to Europe by bike and the only obstacle that I can't ride around is Burma. What's the cheapest way for me and my bike to bypass Burma? Is there any possible way to ride through it? I know I could ride through China but I don't have enough money for that because I've heard that they have a lot of fees.

Havent done China, but I did research the subject quite a bit, before deciding it was prohibitively expensive (for me!)

The cheapest way would probably be freighting by sea, possibly from Port Klang (near Kuala Lumpur) to Chennai, India. But seafreight is slow, and its price advantage will only really begin to show, when the distance is very long. So I´d consider airfreight also, as its much quicker.

It was $900 to fly my DR650 from B'kok to Kathmandu with Trans Air Cargo (speak to Kitima) a few months ago, contact details on the shipping page. This included the crate etc. You own flight is obviously additional.

Here is an interesting read on getting a bike into Burma. I think it might be worth a shot. I will attempt it when I get to Thailand and if it does not work I will then attempt to hire a truck to take the bike through Myanmar. Crazy.... but hey we all want in! The western border from Chiang Mai could offer a stealth entry if one is up for a challenge like that. That area is some dense jungle.

Yes, but if you read more carefully, you will notice that he did not cross into Burma with his own motorcycle, instead he rented them from locals inside the country.

Do also note that there are large areas inside the country, where not even the locals are allowed to travel - nevermind a Western tourist on a motorcycle - so you would need to work your way around them somehow. This will most likely make travelling all the way through the country impossible, too.

I dont think they will let you in in the first place, but sure you can go and give it a try. Personally, I´d just forget about any jungle expeditions trying to sneak into the country, as I think playing James Bond over there, you would be playing with your life.

The Burmese government should probably be put on trial for genocide, and they seem to be extremely paranoid about their personal survival, so how do you think they will deal with people thought to be spies?

Renting a truck inside Burma also sounds very troublesome, and possibly even more expensive. If I had an obsession, that I must get there, I´d go there as a backpacker, not trying in vain to get my motorcycle to go with me.

You can put the bike to a cargo ship from Malaysia or India, get a flight to Burma, stay there a couple of weeks (even try to rent a bike inside the country, if you want), then go meet your bike at the destination. That sounds more like a realistic plan to do Burma these days.

After doing a bit of research I think I may go through Southeast Asia as a backpacker, and then start the biking part in India. It sounds like this should knock off at least $1000 off the trip if I travel by train and bus. Thanks for your input!
