Shipping South Africa to Australia - Experiences.
 

Just adding a possibilty to my UK-Capetown trip... Maybe extend it to Aus... Maybe !!

Anyone got ideas or experiences ??

I used a company called PGF to ship (by ship) to Korea. Only a small bike, but still weighed a lot 250kg so they said incl. pallet and bags. It cost less than £400 I think, plus £2-300 on collection in Korea, I forget the exact amounts. It took about 45 days or something though. PGF palleted it for me in a very tidy box, though I was offered one from Yamaha in Cape Town, but getting it to the shippers was a bit tricky on a bike.

Obviously air is quicker but pricey. More like £1500, but I had time.

Yup, sure....

You do need a carnet (unless there is another way to import in to RSA without one perhaps, though mine wasn't stamped in actually). The shipping company kept hold of mine and sent it to me once they were finsished with it (the carnet).

I think they took a photocopy of my passport. But otherwise, that was about it.

I gave them the measurements I estimated, but as I said the final weight was quite high - higher than estimated so the price went up a bit, so if considering then just remember this.

The company let me drop the bike off at their warehouse near the airport and then drove me over too! Admitedly almost missed the plane, but still the thought was there.

The ship was slightly delayed, one week or something. On the pick-up side [in my case; Korea], good idea to have some proof of value for customs. So the carnet is useful, or an invoice even for the bike. The Korean chaps couldn't seem to realise that all the information they needed was on the carnet, took quite along time.

One other thing; just saw your other post:

I don't have experience of this, but was told not to ship to BA, customs are very picky or something. Try for Rio instead, or Fortaleza maybe. But liek I say I have no experience of this, perhaps others can help out.

Thanks, Klous. Indeed, I got the bike into RSA without Carne du Passage. It is a BMW registered in Kenya and I can not get CDP there. I have a Temporary Permit of Import from RSA revenue authority got in Ressano Garcia Border, that is all.

In fact, I went into RSA five times from diferent countries and I only got the RSA temporary permit of import twice: coming from Zimbabwe (Musina) and from Mozambique (Ressano Garcia), but I left RSA by Botswana and they didn´t ask about the permit, then I went into RSA by Namibia, no paperwork at all, the same happened in Lesotho and Swaziland.

I am wondering if just with the Temporary Permit of Import from ZA, the log book from Kenya and my passport could be enough. to ship to a country where they do not ask for CDP. I will ask the shipping agent you gave me.
