Magadan to South East Asia?

Hello

My boyfriend (aka Dean74 aka The Mule) is going to be finishing part of an epic adventure in Magadan in a few weeks. I'm going to meet him somewhere in South East Asia to do a smaller trip.

Any suggestions as to the best route from Magadan to SEA? I am thinking perhaps a ferry from Vladivostok to South Korea, but not sure where he should go from there? Would like to ship from South Korea into Thailand or Cambodia if such a route exists.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd be very grateful :-)

Cheers,

Holly

Once he gets to Magadan there are two companies that can ship the bikes down to Vladivostok. Both can be found relatively easily at the port.

One, SASCO, will allow bikers to (sometimes) travel on the boat with the bike at the Captain's discretion. In the main, the other, TRANSFES, don't offer this option for the bikers.

There are flights from Magadan to Vladivostok for Dean & Paul if they don't take the 6 day boat ride but I'm not certain of the winter timetable...

You are right, the Dong Chun ferry does run from Vladivostok to South Korea. But the easiest / less bureaucratic exit is regarded as being from Zarubino which is a port about 155 miles outside Vlad.

This port sees far more travellers attempting to exit Russia than Vlad does and, consequently, customs and departure protocols are a lot more user friendly.

If he wants to meet up with you he could do so in South Korea.

Alternatively Wendy Choi or any other shipping agent in Seoul or Busan (sometimes spelled Pusan) could help him in shipping or flying the bike from South Korea somewhere else...

From Vlad ferries also go to Japan. But again the customs and departure processes are a bit more protracted given exit is from Vlad.

Transfes don't offer it officially - but the golden rule in Russia is unofficially everything is negotiable!

The Captain of the Transfes boat we shiped with last year said he would have taken us but it was his first voyage as a Captain for the line.
He said he wanted it to be completely according to the rules as he was 'on probation' - just in case he was being observed by the Company.

If later going through Korea be aware of high Customs Tax payable if the bike is going to be taken onto the roads, even briefly. For bikes flown into Soeul it is far cheaper to have them taken by truck 'in bond' to the Dong Chun ferry.

"In a few weeks" from now the weather in Yakutia/Kolyma would have changed and winter well and truely set in. The seas won't be frozen but the land will be under snow.

Tony - that's why I said "in the main" they don't do it...

Thanks for the info guys.
Any chance you have email contact information for Wendy Choi?

Dean and Paul just conquered the Road of Bones last night! Almost lost some toes in the process. Somehow I think Thailand/SEA will be a breeze in comparison!

Cheers
