Shipping Malaysia to Africa

Hi all

Does anyone have experience of shipping a motorbike from Malaysia (probably Port Klang) to Africa (preferably South Africa). I am currently in Bangkok and looking to ship Nov/Dec this year to South Africa and then travel north to Europe.

Any advice on agents or RORO services would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Glenn

Hi Glenn,

I'm in Malaysia, planning to ship my bike (french registration) from port Klang to CapeTown in nov/dec... and then ride back to Europe.

I'm in touch with an agent in KL, it takes 3 weeks, costs roughly 500EUR all included (wooden crate, fumigation...) for 4cbm, better to get your CPD stamped when you enter Malaysia (you have to ask for it when you cross landborder from Thailande).

I have no idea about how much it cost "on arrival" in Cape Town... if someone has any experience to share about custom clearence in South Africa, thank you !

Have good time in Thailande
See you soon in Malaysia, or later in Africa !!

Cheers,

Matt.

Hi Matt
I was quoted usd1500 to fly my bike from KL to Europe. If you are flying to SA for eur500 then I am very interested in your agent’s details. Please can you send them to me? I am currently in Thailand will be in KL in the next couple of days and will look at shipping out in about 3 weeks.
THANKS
Lorraine

500€ is too cheap for airfreight, so that probably means by sea, and does not include costs at the receiving end.

oops you are right I mean to write if you are shipping to SA for 500. As I am happy to ship to europe if I can do so for less than usd1500

Hi Lorraine

Yes the quote Matt refers to is shipping by sea from Port Klang (Malaysia) to South Africa. I have also received a quote for around 375 EURO.

Pecha - do you have any idea about receiving costs in South Africa? And an agent in Cape Town perhaps?

Cheers
Glenn

Sorry, no personal experience of shipping to Africa. It just seems, that generally when shipping by sea, the costs at the receiving end often bring a surprise.

Happened to me as well: in 2008 I sent my bike from Australia to Finland by sea, and everything including ocean freight was about 500€ at the sending end. When I picked up the shipment in Helsinki, I got charged 180€ for nothing much at all (picked it up on the first possible day, so no warehousing fees). All in all it was still cheap, but was hard to understand that the first payment included transport half-way across the globe, the 2nd one was just some port handling fees!

And remember, unlike Oz or Finland, seaports can be corrupt in many places, that's when your nerves may really get tested! If the price difference is not huge, I'd go for airfreight, much quicker and seems to generally work better for sending bikes.

Hi AssOfSteel,

we plan to do the same route, we are therefore quite interested in your experiences. Could you tell me how long the shipping took? From dropping off your Bike till retrieving it in South Africa. What did you have to pay in total?

Thanks a lot for your help!
