Shipping from Vladiwostok to Valpariso/Chile?
Hi Folks,

we are a german Couple and we start to Vladiwostok in about 4 Weeks. We are riding two KTM LC 4 Adventure and we like to cross Russia, the Stans and Mongolia.

Finaly the Plan was, we take the Ferry to Japan and ship from Japan to Valpariso in Chile. But in the Moment, we are not shure about the Situation in Japan. Well, maybe in Mid September, when we are in Vladiwostok, maybe it is better in Japan...maybe.

It locks difficult to find a Ship from Vladiwostok to Southamerica.

Have anyone any idea for Shipping to Chile?? Air or Sea?

I'd consider going from Vlad to South Korea by ferry.

Then Wendy Choi may be able to help you with shipping the bike from Busan or flying it from Seoul...

Hola Heidi and Bernd,

yes, as Simon said, by ferry to Korea is the best solution I can think of at the moment for your journey.

Read here on the Hubb about taking your bike into Korea. Maybe consider flying your bikes to Santiago de Chile, because shipping it by sea will take a long time.

I have a vague recollection that German registered vehicles are not allowed into S Korea due to some stuff up with signing the Vienna Convention back in the dark ages. Best check with ADAC or Wendy Choi.

Hi,

thanks for that! We will check out the Korean Rules for german Bikes and Riders.

Maybe it is much more easy to fly to the USA or Canada, or not?

Is Vlad the best choise for shipping/flying the bikes or is Magadan better?

But, the Way to Magadan is in the End of September maybe not funny?

Sure, the northeast is in bad shape. But the rest of the country is fine. Currently, we have a shortage of bottled water (tap water is drinkable though), yoghurt (most people can go without for a while), natto (an awful fermented soybean food that you don't want to eat anyways), and tourists (please come and spend money!).

Japan is the same situation regarding German vehicles. Germany is not part of the 1949 Geneva convention on road traffic, so you can't officially ride here. BUT, most people don't know this. If you don't mention it yourself, it is usually not a problem. I know many Germans who have ridden in Japan.

@chris: yes, thats what we thing. And we like to go to Japan, to a totaly different Culture.

Whit the german vehicles we know this, but...

I think, the shipping from Japan to Chile is much more easyer than from Russia. Tokio is not the only Place to check out for Shipping Agents, or not?

I had a look at a few shipping routes and next to no Asia to S America routes exists expect for exceptional loads eg oil rigs, refinery components, very high value loads, etc. Usual groupage routes are Asian ports to Vancouver, LA where the load is regrouped for East Coast USA and East and West Coast South America the back through the Panama Canal and start again.

well, south korea might not work with vehicles registered in germany.
my friend faces the same problem with his TOYOTA camping car.
and japan doesn't accept japanes brands - at least not cars. so you are lucky that it is a german made motorbike.

I don't think that is accurate. I have seen many foreign registered Japanese brand motorcycles before, and the laws pertaining to temporary import are the same for cars and bikes. If you post the information you received about that, I can possibly verify the facts.

Hi Chris,

i have a Question about the Carnet. I know, thats the Carnet must be testetd by the JAF. Do you know, how this works? I have to send the Carnets before entering Japan to the JAF, or only a copy??

You send the carnet by fax in advance. Procedures are listed here: JAF For Visitors Bringing Vehicles with Carnet de Passages en Douane
Then you go to the JAF office in person when you arrive.
It is possible to get authorization without faxing in advance. But you will be sitting in the office a long time waiting.

Unfortunately, JAF does not have a public e-mail address.
MAYBE they will e-mail you if you ask. No guarantee, though...
The telephone number of the International Relations Division is (I think) 81-3-3578-4910 Fax number is 81-3-3578-4911 (Change 81 to 0 when calling from inside Japan).

Usually a week or so in advance is OK.
Or maybe you can send it now and telephone/fax/email(if they will tell you an address) when you know the exact arrival date.
Unless the ferry changes again, you will arrive at the port of Sakaiminato of Tottori Prefecture.
