Shipping from Vancouver to South America
 

I'd like to fly my bike (and myself) to Columbia, Equador or Peru. Anyone have a recommended carrier out of Vancouver, BC?

I think the way to go was the Thomas and Andrea did. But they used sea freight, and there is always a caveat with going by sea!

Thanks for the lead. This site is so huge and with so much info that I'm finding it helpful but sometimes a bit difficult to find specifics. i knew there must be something in some thread somewhere! Did you end up going? Did you use this same method of shipping?

The is an cargo airline out of Miami to Bogota for around $900 (aprox). Try to find something from Vancouver to Miami and do the math. I can help you here (Miami).

When are you planning to leave on your trip?
My son and I are planning to ship our bikes down to Chile by cargo ship as the cost appears to be much less than by air. Currently we are planning to attend the Nakusp meeting, and with info gathered, prepare the bikes for transport and ship them out. We plan on meeting the bikes down in Chile in October. If this sounds interesting, maybe we could look at shipping the bikes all together?

We are also looking to ship our bikes (KKLR650 and DRZ400) in October to Chile. To anywhere in South America, really, but it seems reasonable to explore Patagonia starting in October then work our way northwards when it gets less hospitable weather-wise down there.

I was thinking that flying would be the easiest, but I don't know if it is prohibitively expensive.

Mark, have you started getting quotes for sea shipping? How many bikes before there's a bulk discount? (I actually assume that would be when there's enough bikes to fill a container.)

I'll post more when we start getting some specific quotes.

Do we know how many bikes it takes to fill a container? I'm subscribed to this thread but the variable for me is some knee surgery in the fall. Date as yet unknown.

There are extra costs to work through Chilean Customs.

It appears that we can consolidate the bikes further to reduce the size of the crate, thus the price.
We would be happy to investigate shipping bikes together to save more money and a container shipment with more bikes might be a great option if others are heading the same way at the same time.

Our thoughts for travel once we reach Chile is to head for Puerto Montt. I understand that there is a ferry from there to Puerto Natales.
Can anyone confirm bikes can be shipped with us on this Ferry?

based on the numbers, I think we could get 6-10 bikes without stacking them, in a 20 ft container. Just my guess.

Mark and others shipping south:

I shipped down by ship in December '08. Check blog (horizonsunlimited.com/tstories/thode) I would suggest you contact Martina at "villakunterbuntvalpo@yahoo.de" she and Anso put together a container for four bikes coming back to California. I did not use her services when shipping down as I had already made a commitment before I got numbers from her but it was very close to same cost. Having someone on that end is most helpful.

I tried to find enough people to fill a container with bikes but no luck. If you can do it, you will save a bundle. Basic container will be m/l $2000 plus all the port charges and fees. My costs came to $1350 if I remember correctly.

Flying has many advantages but with the cost of fuel the best quote I got was $3800.

I plan on being at Nakusp and will offer what little wisdom I gained to those who are interested.

I have been in touch with Martina for over a month now, but she is unable to ship our bikes out of Vancouver. Shipping 2 bikes appears to be more economical from Van, but shipping 4 or more in a container sounds more economical from Seattle if possible. I have read numerous blogs about Martina and Enzo and their help to others. I would like to give them as much of my business as I can. 1 of the reasons that I want to ship to San Antonio is its close to Valpo and they can help.

I want to ride to South America but I can't enter the US. I would be in for shipping out of Vancouver if the cost is reasonable. I'm in Ontario now but don't mind riding the bike out there for a good deal on shipping. When are you planning to ship out?

We're collecting some quotes right now for shipping out of Seattle, both by air and by sea. Once the first round of quotes comes in, I'll post what we found.

Seattle is no good for me. I can't go to the States at all.

Martina got back to me and suggested Baseline Forwarding. Marwin @ Baseline quoted me today to ship 2 bikes from Vancouver to San Antonio, Chile for $1171.56 CAN.

We have to crate and deliver the bikes to a warehouse in Delta and should take 35-40 days transit time. Talked to 2 different dealers and both are willing to give metal/cardboard motorcycle crates for FREE.

Found air flights for ourselves from Seattle to Santiago today $489 USD each, Last week they were $607 USD each.
