Egypt to Mombassa

Whoops - posted the last request on the wrong board! Sorry....

Question is still the same, although since I posted the request yesterday I have spent another fruitless day at the Sudanese embassy. It is pandemonium there and I can't tell you how soul destroying it is to see other travellers who applied more recently than me getting their visa while there is no news at all about mine, although believe me I do feel happy for them!

I have also read about Susan and Grant's experience of flying their bike from Cairo to Nairobi, and apart from the hassles involved, I don't really have the best part of $2000 to burn.

So my only option (apart from the Sudanese visa) would be a seafreight option - so any ideas anyone has, probably to Mombassa would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Charlie

The problem with shipping by sea from Egypt to Mombasa, is that you are combining two of the worst experiences we have heard of or experienced. Getting out of Egypt with a vehicle is a major hassle (see our item on the Shipping page on flying from Cairo to Nairobi). The fact that it was airfreight didn't make it any more hassle, probably less, it was Egyptian Customs that were the problem.

And sea shipping into Mombasa is also a major hassle (see Solon's item on the same page on shipping into Mombasa from the UK, wherein they took almost a month longer to get their vehicle than anticipated). Unfortunately we have no good reports of shipping into anywhere other than Europe and North America.

See Ollie's reply to your original post. I agree with his response, which is to consider shipping from Aqaba, Jordan, instead. You can get to Aqaba by ferry from Nuweiba in the south Sinai if you don't want to travel through Israel.

Some contacts in Aqaba:

If you are shipping by sea from either of these countries, I would suggest contacting P&O Nedlloyd for their agents, as they should be reliable.

Also check the contacts Ollie gave us on the shipping page, several of which seem to be quite good sized firms:

It does seem like you're between a rock and a hard place on this one, though. Good luck and keep in touch.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
