Hi Rubber-Q ;-)

my flight is ZAR 4,737 (just under 500 Euros) one-way from JHB to Perth. Incidently the bike's going with the same airline (Mauritius Air), but most probably not on the same flight.

The travel agent (Rennies in S.A.) doesn't offer additional services like organising the bike transport anymore. They used, but that was years ago.

I just saw your latest post. One month for SA is far too short! I just spent 4 months travelling in SA, NAM, Lesotho & Botswana and felt it to be rather short. If you need any tips, send me an email.

From SA to Aus - Shipping
I am looking at shipping my Harley to Aus to be there in end-April 08. Does anyone know if the Aussies are strict on noize (I have a screaming eagle exhaust). Also any other advice on shipping?

Are you 'just' touring around then leaving? Or staying? Attitudes are different for each .. if you are just tourng then leaving they won't be too fussed. If staying then you'll have to change the exhaust. Some people put them on after rego checks .. but you can get booked for it. With tourists they'll not bother with the paperwork (unless you make them).

Touring Ozz
I intend touring Ozz, then returning to SA. Another question. I intend riding from Melbourne to Perth on the coastal route (anticlockwise) and am planning to do this in 6 weeks. Question 1. Will this give enough time to enjoy some of the nicer places without having to spend too much time travelling? 2. I understand that the speed limit in Aus is 100kph - can one push this a little higher, say 130kph, in the northern, more remote parts? 3. Is petrol easily available every 200km between Georgetown-Darwin-Derby-Coral Bay-Perth?

Speed limits
The speed limits vary from road to road - and even along the one road.

In the Northern Teritory the upper speed imit is 130 km/h, the rest of OZ has 110km/h.
Under those limits we have 100,90,80,70,60,50,40 ... km/h.

How far can you 'push' this ? That depends on the person who catches you! Police Highway Patrol people are more likely to book you than regular Police. That said .. you are unlikely to be booked for up to 10km/h over the limit. But 1 km/h more and you are likely to be booked. Except in Victoria where 1km/h over the limit will have you booked.

Oh .. 'we' have fixed speed cameras .. some have signs, some don't .. best to do the limit +0, around them ..

Buy the Hemma Australian Motrocycle Atlas - that has perol staions marked where it matters .. and distances so you can figure out your travelling. It even has a guide to good rides. Hemma Maps

Think 300km range is required travelling south from Broome (west coast)?

Some travel faster than others - more speed, less time looking at places, less time watching the waves on the beach, the circling bird..

Work out how far it is, how far you travel in a day, divide the total distance by the daily travel, multiply by 7/6 (evey sevnth day off) and you have the days you think you'll require.. And I'd allow a lazy day or several for the holiday feel. Up to you really. The longer you can take, the more you'll see and experience.
