Shipping from Brisbane to KL, Malaysia

Hi everyone - my first post!
Am traveling to Indo China in Dec 2011 for 2 months - Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos - cant wait.
No probs getting the bike to KL but getting conflicting messages re customs.
Have spoken with a customs agent who are saying no permits are being isued (assume they mean an ICP). However, I've spoken to another traveller who imported a bike in Jan 2011 without an agent and without any problems. Had considered using an agent as this will be my first ever trip. But ....... maybe I should just wing it and do it myself? Seems that a lot of posts are very old. Anyone with any current experiences? Would hate to arrive and find I cant get the bike through customs. Any contacts in KL would be greaty appreciated too.
Many thanks
Dave

Should have taken Grants advice!

After looking and searching through the BUBB 'properly' I discovered in the Planning section a post from someone who had shipped a bike from Sydney to KL. Have been in contact with them (Paul King from CFI Airlift - Paul.King@GFIAirlift.com.au) and while they haven’t finalised a quote yet, they come highly recommended and seem very competent. The same post mentioned an agent in KL (Raugu at VESCO-MTO (M) SDN. BHD - ragu@vescomto.com.my - again, only good things said about them) who has provided a quote and assures me that they can get an ICP and the bike through customs without difficulty (I had conflicting info about this previously). Once I've finished the trip, will certainly update the Planning section with my experiences.
As an aside, the agent has quoted me a bit over $500USD to handle all of the customs clearance. Does that sound reasonable? Seems pretty dear to me. If they do as good a job as it’s been suggested they will, then maybe it isn’t. In future I'll do customs myself, but only have a limited timeframe this trip and i don’t want to spend 3 days struggling with customs.
Thanks to everyone for the other info re their trips to Asia that I’ve discovered on the site too
Dave

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
