Shipping Darwin - Singapore/Malaysia

Hi

Does anyone have any experience with shipping the bikes by sea from Darwin to either Singapore or Malaysia?
We have been getting quotes from Perkins and although the costs are pretty reasonable on the shipping side of things, the port charges in Singapore are just ridiculous. For example we have to pay just under $300 per bike for towing the bikes from the port to the port gates! We will also have to purchase local insurance and a bunch of other things which will add to the costs.

So... would it maybe be cheaper and more hassle free to ship the bikes to KL Malaysia instead? If anyone has any experience doing this it would be greatly appreciated to hear from you.

Thank you

Sanne

I'd ship to Port Klang near KL, I found it very cheap and easy to clear customs.

More details here (bottom of page):

Aus to KL

We had originally wanted to go the opposite way (Singapore to Perth) but gave up when we worked everything out re. costs.

In the end it was much, much cheaper to fly from KL to Perth.

No matter which way we tried to work it out (I wanted to come down the middle of Australia) it was just too damn expensive (2009).

It was a breeze from KL to Perth and so would imagine it would be true the other way round.

You can read about it here if it would be helpful.Malaysia

if you then follow through to the next update you can pick up the story of arriving in Australia and (sort of) reverse all the information!

Regards

Bernard and Cathy
