Container Share from Cape Town to UK, December 2010

Hello,

We are pricing up a container shipment from Cape Town to the UK.

We have a Toyota Landcruiser so will need approx. half a 40 foot container. Another car, a bike or 2.. it don't matter it should squeeze in.

I have some tenuous contacts in the industry that may prove useful?.. Worth a try?

We are arriving in Cape Town around the 7th December and will fly out on the 21st so this is our window in which we'll try to make things happen.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Shipping company contacts

Hi,

We wont be there to share your container as we will be shipping out in august next year. I wondered which company you were using? We are considering RoRo as it is cheaper by far I think. Just got to figure out the security side as one company has told me that you have to leave the vehicles unlocked!

Thanks and good luck with finding someone to share your container.

Rachel

Hello Rachel

I've not yet any particular company in mind but I can let you know how our experiences pan out.

Re. Ro-Ro; yes you must give them your keys so that they can drive the vehicle on and off the vessel(s). Depends on what your vehicle is and how it is set up. Sadly our contents would be at the mercy of whosoever takes our keys should we go with Ro-Ro. Luck is the major player. We've met a couple who had their cars contents gone through (using Ro-Ro) and the car had a separate and "secure" back.

Ro-Ro is cheaper by all accounts though it might be false economy. e.g. Durban and Port Elizabeth seem to be the Ro-Ro ports but you then need to get to Cape Town or Johannesberg to get home. 2 people on a plane Durban to Jo'berg maybe £300 so your savings using Ro-Ro are already reduced. This is a rough figure but it is worth considering especially as the security of a container might just be worth paying for.

Anyhoo. I will try to keep updated info here.

All the Best

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
