Shipping car from Netherlands to Canada
 

Hi all,

I am a newbie at internet fora, so please forgive me if I do not follow the rules completely. I read through some pages of HU first, before I started posting, but finding the information I need proved difficult, so therefore my post.

We (my boyfriend and me) plan to leave the Netherlands for Canada at the beginning of January with our own car (yes, car, sorry, no motorcycle), a Lada Niva. Our plan is to wait for spring to arrive and then to head off to Alaska, drive all the way up to Deadhorse, then turn around to drive all the way south until we reach the end tip of Patagonia. Needless to say this will take us a few months... years. :D

Big question now is: how to ship our car from the Netherlands to Canada? I already found some information about shipping companies (I think many readers of HU recommended Wallenius Wilhelmsen), but I am even more concerned about the paperwork:
- Can we drive our car with Dutch license plates through Canada, the USA and further down?
- How about insuring the car?
- What about customs upon arrival and departure (from Canada to USA)?

Could you please advise me on these pressing matters? Thanks so much in advance!
