Shipping by sea from USA to Australia
 

We are planninh to travel thru Australia and New Zealand. Can someone provide sea shipping company info for shipping from the west coast of USA to Australia?

Are you SURE you want to go by sea? NOT usually worth the savings, and often it's MORE expensive by the time you actually get the bikes out, despite seeming to be much cheaper. Read the shipping page "Air or sea?" for more.

Hi Les, Grant is right, flying is just about the same price when you figure in the port fees for Australia. WE shipped along with a couple of German guys from Kuala Lumpur to Perth and had the unexpected $500 Aus. port fees for EACH bike greet us in Perth. good luck, Cameron

hopefully this is the right place.....I am new to this Hubb and to be honest...a bit confused....:(

I am from germany and traveling with my old XT 600 since two years here in south and northamerica. The plan is to ship it from california to australia in march. Anybody who can give me an adress or contacts????
Do I need a carnet de passage? because right now I dont have one....
Any informations would be great.

Hi,
A carnet is required for Australia and New Zealand. As I understand it you should get your Carnet from your home country. In your case the ADAC are the authority on this. Look at:

Have a poke around on this site. From what I can gather, it is relatively cheap compared to UK (for Egypt the RAC in UK want 8 times the value of the vehicle as a deposit !!!)

I am an Australian who is travelling to the States this year to pick up a bike ride there, and finally ship it out of L A. I've been trying for weeks to get ashipping company but have found nothing so far. Bikes uncrated are not wanted as freight so crating is the road you may have to go down. The bonus is that you can fill the crate with your gear.
You must have a carnet and the bike must be absolutely clean -not a speck of dirt on it, otherwise you will pay big money to get it cleaned at the wharf.
If you want to know what the requirements are in terms of registration go to the ADV site and in trip planning find the threads- "Brisbane to perth" and "Australia, come and see it".
If you find a seafreight company, can you post the details here.

I am going to contact Air New Zealand, V Australia, and Quantas to get air freight rates.

I shipped with RObert of Imperial frieght a few years ago. 500 and about a month from la drop off to anywhere in nz. 500us$ plus 100 in NZ to deliver anywhere. He is not the nicest guy to work with but he got the job done. let me know if he is still doing it

Shipping to Aust. from L A
 

Finally got a quote from a Brisbane firm who deal with someone in L A.
Actual seafreight is only $491 but with all the add ons it comes to nearly $1500.

The freight itself could be roughly in the ballpark, but what´s included in the "add-ons", I mean: does it include estimated costs at the receiving end? This seems to be a cause of grief to many (happened to me, too!)... and often they´re tough to know exactly, until you go pick up the shipment.

Two years ago, I paid ~700 euros total from Sydney to Helsinki by sea, and this includes costs at the receiving end (which were close to 200).

edit. In Oz, I used Tradelanes, located in Melbourne, but they had an agent in Sydney, that handled the sending. Everything went into plan, except the container missed a boat change in Singapore, and so was over 2 weeks late from the original ETA, when arriving.

I did intend bringing back the Moto Guzzi I've bought in the States but for a number of reasons the difficulties and economics of doing so have resulted in a change of mind.
I'll just ride the bike for the eight weeks and sell it in California before I depart.
Unfortunately high shipping costs, GST levied and the risk of damage make the whole shipping exercise very unattractive..
