We are planning to be in vladivostok around Mid June 2012 -if anyone would like to share a shipping container with us, please get in touch.

If anyone can give us some information on companies that may help us do this or if anyone has recently been to russia and done similar, we would love to hear from you.

Just for reference my quote from Yuri was $4500 & $5500 from vlad to southampton UK and Seattle USA respectively, that was for a 20' ISO container with a $200 surcharge per each additional bike, too much for me sadly but passing the info along

Do you want to ship by sea or air? I will be mid of july in Vlad and want to go by air to Anchorage.

There hasn't been a scheduled air freight to Anchorage from Vlad for some time ... certainly none there when we were in Vlad last year..but things change so who knows.

My plan is to take the ferry to south korea and than a plane. Wendy told me, that there is no cargo flight to Alaska. She only can offer me Vancouver, San Fransisco or L.A.
Option would be to take the passanger flight to Alaska but than I need a whole container. Thats about $11.000, thats too expensive. If there is another one than it would be ok, there is place for 3 bikes in a container.

Drive2 ,,
With all due respects to Wendy ,, she is not a cargo person.

I have strongly recommeded her for doing the customs clearance, and that only,, in and out of Korea ,, for a fee around USD 100. She is a wonderful person,,, but not really a qualified freight expert.

Alaska Air, Korean Air, Asiana ,, all flies to Alaska ,, some to Vancouver or Seattle then to Alaska ,, carrying both passenger and cargo ,,
Call the airlines cargo department direct.
You will have to hire a forwarder ,, have Wendy do the paper work.
Expect some where USD 2,500 per bike, for the shipment.

I also have an alluminium bike air cargo box, which I got from Harley and very light,, if you need one ,, making the box by the shipping company would be around USD 500 ... it will be wood and takes a day or so.

Call the airlines ,, ,some of them will say ,, they can only quote to a freight forwarder,,, so find one in Anchorage ,, let him have airline comm,,, do the paperwork for the arrival ,,

Even ask from Vlad to Anchorage ,,, Korean air and aerofloat flies to Seoul from Vlad,, think of it as a baggage service ,, they load and transfer ,, they don't have to fly direct ,,

Danzas in the list is a EU company , offices every where in the world ,,

drive2 23 Mar 2012 14:39

@seouljoe

Thanks for that information. Now I have an offer by DHL. They can arrange the transport by air from Seoul to Anchorage for about € 2800.

What is the price for your cargo box?

seouljoe 23 Mar 2012 15:39

ICN to Alaska

2,800 Euro from DHL sounds bit stiff.
Call Korean air and Alaska also ,,
I paid DHL for Frakfurt to Seoul 2,300 Euro,, basis 450KG ,, 2.1m x 1.4x 1.1 m box.
Box is free ,, but I did pay USD 130 for the transport from Harley to my cottage.
You can have the box gratis,,,,just after using,, try to give it to another HUBBer.

Hire this guy to deliver the bike and the box to DHL ,, ca. USD 250,,,you ride in the truck,,, DHL does the packing and customs. You take the bus to passenger terminal and fly out ,,,
http://blog.naver.com/PostView.nhn?b...tTypeCall=true

Again call Alaska and Korean air. They bring fish from Alaska to Korea , goes back light.

bushman_uk 23 Mar 2012 23:38

The new Vladivostok international airport is due for it's first flight on June 1st, i cannot believe an investment of this magnitude will not increase the freight traffic aswell as the size of the aircraft, so there maybe hope to freight a motorbike out of there.

We do the same - maybe its idea to cooperate?

Hi there.
Just letting you know that we (2 BMW R1200GSA bikes) are searching similar solution:
First we tried to find direct way from Vladivostok to Anchorage, but it seems much easier to go via South Korea.
We plan to arrive to Vladivostok on 15th of july 2012 and take a ferry to Korea. Then ship the bikes somehow to Anchorage, Alaska.
We are not in a hurry and plan to restart riding in America at the end of August 2012.
Sharing a container is an option ... or maybe its cheaper to transport them by DHL, Air Korea or Alaskan...
Please let us know, what options have you found most reasonable.

seouljoe 27 Mar 2012 13:12

Vlad / Korea to Alaska

A Korean freighter forwarder is working on the air cargo from Vlad or Seoul to Alaska ,, should have answer in a few days. Will let you know.

I will also be mid of July with my F800GS in Vlad. Ferry to South Korea goes on Wendsday. So if you arrive on 15th we can take the ferry on 18th.
I wait for the answer from DHL when the flights will go. I want to be in Anchorage latest on 29th.
Would be great to meet you and to take the ferry and the transport together.
Will you also take the Amor Highway? I will come from Mongolia to Ulan Ude and then to Vlad.

Thats sounds interessting. I am looking forward for it.
At the moment it looks like that DHL is the best option. They will do all the paperwork and the transport. I just have to give them my bike in Seoul and will get it back in Anchorage, no work for me.

Stemic01 28 Mar 2012 13:55

Vladivostok around 7-10th July.
If everything goes as planned I will arrive Vladivostok around 9th of July in a BMW F800GS and plans to get to Anchorage as my first choice, but Seattle and Vancouver will be OK as well. I had a plan of doing a flight to save som time (and accomodation). I have not got any flights out of there yet and are interesting in planning with others so we can find easy and maybe cheaper solutions.

I am a solo rider and would like to join fellow bikers on parts of the route if anyone is interested. Route will be like this:
- Norway-Europe-Turkey (10.may) -Iran-Turmenistan-Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan 1th.June)-Russia-Mongolia 14.june-Russia (Ulan Ude 27.th june)-Vladivostok 7th July) --> shipping over to US/Canada and we take things from there. Preferably Alaska :) Give me a hint if you are in the area or along the same route in the period.
The dates and final route are not closed yet and I can be flexible :)

seouljoe 29 Mar 2012 00:06

2 Bikes

If two bikes ,, and no time restrain ,,
Go with Wallenius car carrier (They load Hyundai, Kia,, then Toyota , Nissan ,, to US west coast then to Europe) from Masan to Seattle for USD 800 per bike ,, no packing needed,, takes 12 days for bike to arrive.
This,,, Wendy Choi knows how to ,, my 2011 trip ,, showed her how to contact and load. A Yank used this method to ship one bike last year as well, after I showed him how.
2,800 Euro per bike by air freight sounds about right and if it include box fee (I've paid 500 Euro to DHL for the box. Korean forwarder in Frankfurt had to hire Germans to build a wooden box and wanted 800 Euro) . In fact DHL Korea should have a metal box, I've used from Frankfurt to Incheon.
1 x 20ft ocean container will load about 8 bikes ,, ocean freight is around USD 2,200 per container,, Busan to Vancouver or Seattle. Domestic trucking in USA or Canada to Alaska ,, should not cost more than 600 USD per bike.
My bike shipment from Incheon - Long Beach, New Jersey - Bremerhaven by Wallenius and air freight via DHL from Frankfurt - Incheon ,, all together was around USD 6,500
In fact ,,DHL Frankfurt Flughafen has a motorcycle department run by Esther Hartmann ,, they also carry boxes.

Another possibility ,, use what they call feeder service ,, Han Jin Container Lines, Maersk Lines et al all have feeder service from Korea or Japan vis a vis to Vladivostok,, the freight is around USD 800 per 20ft box ,, in other words they use a smaller vessel to transfer the loads,,, that is how Eastern Russia gets their electronics ,, Ramens from Korea etc. Load the container in Vladivostok ,, bring it to Busan ,, gets transferred to Asia -US West coast service then ,, again feederd up to Alaska,, under same flag carrier. I bet ,, it will come to something like USD 6,000 for the 20ft box. If so ,, Bushman UK's Yuri can handle this for you ,, you guys just need to get enough bikes organised in Vladivostok, to economise. Flying out you can either fly to Korea or Japan then to Alaska direct and wait for container to arrive ,, tranasit ,, however will be long ,, 20+ days. Lots of bears to count,,,many titty bars in Anchorage and Fairbanks.

Wallenius and other shipping lines ,, after leaving Korea ,, always stops by Japan ,, like Kobe or Yokohama,, so you could try those ports ,, i.e, cross Sakhalin to Hokkaido ,, then drive south,, some 1,400KM
, then you've have to have the carnet ,,, typhoon season in July, in Japan and Monsoon in Korea.
Korea once you arrive on the ferry from Vlad,, you drive max , 300KM to get to Busan from Dong Ha, on highway 7. No carnet,, best looking women in the Far East , great food, cheap booze,,, and Seoul Joe is here.

Lastly ,, talk to the professionals ,, give them the bike dimensions and weight. You can also make it freight collect, where you pay at the destination. Documentation fee is nominal.
You can all mention my name , in fact do ,, so we can get more clout with these people. Say Seoul Joe aka Yun-Soo PARK sent you.

They suck ,, DO NOT USE... no idea what they are doing.

It would be nice to meet you. I am also a solo rider on F800GS. My original plan was also Iran and Turkmenistan. But right now it is too hot for me because of the political situation. My route will be from Germany, to Ukraine, Kasachstan, Mongolia, Russia to Vlad. I will be mid of July in Vlad. Plan is to be in June in Mongolia.

I made a reservation for the ferry from Vlad to Danghae with a german travel agency (Fähre: Wladiwostok – Korea – Japan | Gleisnost). I will take the ferry on July 18th.
DHL will do the transport from Seoul to Anchorage.
If there is anybody else in the same time period we can do things together.

Drive2 & the rest of you following the thread :)
Have you done some good comparison of the alternatives (Cost/Time/hazzle) between Korea and Vladivostok? Are there any good options from Vlad?

1. How is it to take the bikes into South Korea? Do you need a visa / Carnet?
2. What is the cost of this ferry from Vlad to S.Korea?
3. South Korea alternative w/ship: Total cost incl. ferry from Vlad, bike crate (if needed), shipping, paperwork etc. (+Total time from Vlad to Alaska/USA/Canada)
4. South Korea alternative Flight: Total cost incl. ferry from Vlad, bike crate, shipping, paperwork etc. (+Total time from Vlad to Alaska/USA/Canada)
5. Vladivostok option total cost and time as 3 & 4?

I saw that Yuri is the man in Vlad. I am very curius about the options available and which gives the lowest cost / time / troubles.

Thanks for sharing guys :)

We've heard that its not allowed for germans to ride their own motorbike in South Korea because of a missing agreement between Germany and South Korea.
Who has more informations about getting there and be able to ride the own bike?

seouljoe 7 Apr 2012 13:00

Deutche Motoraad im Sud Korea

Technically yes ,,, but do not worry ,, make sure you bring an international license.
All my Deutche freund drives here kein problem,,
Worst case you can have your bike shipped on an one ton truck for 200 euro to any schiffshafen or flughafen.
And you travel the Korea on the bullet train.

Miiks 9 Apr 2012 06:57

Hei guys.

Cost/time/hassle factor is my reason to rule out South Korea.
Yuri has been really helpful providing information/quotes on shipping from Vladivostok.
In my opinion the only reason to see the trouble of taking a ferry to South Korea would be to share a container. (or interest to visit S-Korea) If one can't find anyone to share a container from Vladivostok...then it might be financially big enough of a reason to spend the extra time/hassle to take the ferry to Korea.
Just my personal opinion.

A 20" container from Vladi to Seattle is at the moment about 5500$ + 200$/bike. Really dear price alone to pay but not bad if there's more bikes in Vladi at the same time. No crating hassle, just tie down the bikes.

Having said that...anyone interested in shipping/sharing from Vladi to Seattle at the end of June/early July?:mchappy:
OR anyone interested in shipping bikes to Helsinki, Finland at that time?
There's two of us planning to arrive in Vladivostok around June 28th (+/- Mr. Murphy) and one bike is heading to Finland for sure. The other bike may go either way depending on possible other bikes sharing a container one way or the other.

Hi and thank you all for answers. I am working on the different options listen now to see what is possible - I will post the outcome of those later.

CONTAINER SHARING:
Are there anyone in the Vladivostok/South Korea area who wants to share a container to North America early August? I will arrive on a BMW F800GS. I am flexible on Vladivostok / South Korea as long as it is quick, easy and a reasonable price. In North America am I flexible regarding ship to harbour from Anchorage to Tijuana. Price and time are more important. Don't want to stay 60 days at hotel waiting for the bike to arrive.
geordie_e: PM me if you are still in the loop for sharing. Would be intersting to see your travelroute and dates and we might ride along for parts of the journey.

Miiks 14 Apr 2012 19:21

..Thanks Seouljoe.

I got a hold of someone at FedEx Seoul.
First they were reluctant to give me a quote, just told me that it's quite expensive..
Second request provided a price estimate of about 10000 US$/bike.

They really don't want to have anything to do with shipping motorbikes?:hammer:

Shipping from Vladivostock or Korea to the USA End of August 2012

We will be travelling from Italy to Vladivostock, Russia by motorcycle then we will be shipping the motorcycles to the US either from Vladivostock of from Korea. We might take the ferry to Donghae, Korea - we are trying to plan it– At that point we will want to ship 2 motorcycles to the US. The period will be the end of August maybe somebody wants to split a container.
The motorcycles ( BMW 1200 GS ) weight 230kg or 500 pounds each empty ( probably around 280 kg or 600 pounds with luggages ) -

A 20ft box ex Busan to Seattle - Long Beach range is about USD 2800 and loads APPX 18 tons. 40 ft box is about USD 4400 and loads APPX 22 tons ,,
If you can't share the box due to schedule,, call Wendy Choi and have her use Wallenius Wilhelmsen Ro-Ro ,, costs about USD 1,000 including docs and transit time is about 10days to Tacoma, Wa ,, south of Seattle or 14 days to Long Beach, Ca.
Those going to Alaska in a container , will have to use feeders ex Seattle via feeder service such as Crawly maritime and will cost you an arm and a leg.
For container ,, you will need boxes made for the bikes or have them do the lashing and securing.

Also LCL option, to send single bike,, is great,, cost about USD 1,000 for all inclusive box, packing and docs.

I can recommend
For ocean freight ex Korea to US, Asia and Europe. Only because they have the volume to consolidate and offices in most continents. It is a Sam Sung Group of companies.

Ciao

It is for ocean
20 ft (6.1 m), 8 ft (2.44 m), 8 ft 6 in (2.59 m) carrying 18tons ,, 6 bikes easy ,, seen 8 Harleys go in.

I bet most of the forwarders will not quote now ,, since end of August is far away.

Wallenius will quote early. No packing, no container ,, just roll on like a ferry.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics - Offices and agents - Search result

Here we go Paolo , ,
It was posted on another thread, while back ,,
Make sure you give the weight and measure of your bikes..
Get a rate from WW then have Wendy Choi do the export documentation,, USD 100 per B/L ..then you must drive to the loading port be it at Incheon or Ma San ,, have Korea customs PERSONAL CARRY ITEM inspection team give you the stamp. Then hire a forwarder in USA ,, give them well in advance your bike's EPA status and B/L number etc. Make sure your bike has the EPA approval under Home Land Security act ,, or you will be stuck for weeks at the US port.

Hi. I am a solo rider currently in Iran and working my way eastwards through the Pamirs and Mongolia and are also looking into sharing of container or other great way of shipping cheap, quick and easy. I was considering DHL by air, but all included it will be €5000 for biker + rider from Vlad to USA (Includes ferry from Vlad €500) . I can be in the Vladivostok area sometime around the 7-12.August, but can be a bit flexible on that. Every shippingday includes one day at hotel so preferably quicker than 2 weeks shipping.
If anyone found any shipping by air which is cheap it would be great.

MasterMoDlx 22 Jun 2012 20:04

we are a German couple on two F650GS - will also be in Vlad during the 2nd half of August. We want to ship to the United States as well - port of entry doesn't really matter (cheapest wins). We're up for a container sharing!

lifeinitaly 23 Jun 2012 14:34

I was unable to find a reasonable flight / shipping. Yuri ( mentioned in this thread ) proposed a 20 feet container for $6000 - The container will be shared by several bikes but it takes 40 days to reach the US . What do I do for 40 days ?? Also proposals for shipping the bike air from Korea are around $6000 per bike which is too much considering we will be shipping the bikes again from US to Italy + we need air tickets ourselves. If anybody finds a good solution please pm me or email me about it -

I also received a quote from Wallenius ( Kindlly suggested by seoulJoe ) but the transit time by see is 30 days and it is not guaranteed. The ship can be delayed since it is Monsoon season -

Ciao Paolo

Please keep us posted on this.

Were in Mongolia at the moment and can be in Vladivostok to meet others that may wish to share the cost of shipping bikes over to either US or Canada.

We are 2 up on a 660 Tenere.

Thanks, Dazzer and Leigh

I saw two bikers twice ,, all four and a rider and tandem ,, all heading towards Vad ,, few days ago ,, could this be some of you here?
It seems ,, every time I ask to stop , only the Poles , Ukrainians and Russians stop to chat ,, Anglos too tight butted to stop?
If you see a guy on a white Harley Road King ,, stop and say hello ,,
ROad being perfect from Vlad to Chita is a sheer BS ,, it seems to have degraded in a year ,, too many hazzards ,,, pot holes ,, bumps ,,, and yes consteuction still going on ,,gravel is easy ,,, its the hiddeb stuff that tjrow you outr into a whacko ,, life threatening kind.

We transported the bikes from Seoul to Seattle

Im the Estonian who just did it two weeks ago and posted the solution to the other forum over here (see answer down here). Seems like either we are stupid or money devaluated recently - its not as cheap any more for shipping the bike on the route.
You can find some cheap plane tickets: from Seoul to Seattle the ticket was about 1200 usd. ... But i searched and waited and the best solution was Seoul-Tokyo-Manila-Honolulu-SanFrancisco ... 900 usd alltogether and couple of days everywhere... The only thing to miss is family, buddy and bike

Hi all!
Thanks SeoulJoe for very useful information! Unfortunately we didnot meet you on the road but according to Yuri's information you headed to UlanBator when we were on the road to Vladivostok. Hope you had lot of fun ;).
Anyway we chosed the hard way to get from far-east to US. Easier and chepaer would have been send the bikes directly from Vlad to Seattle with Yuris container (approximately 5500 usd per container olus 200usd per bike)

We managed to get the tickets for Eastern Dream (vlad-donghae) from the ferrystation but we were just lucky. They are sold out for weeks. Yuri Melnikof helped with customs in Vlad. Ist incredibly lot of time/money/papers and i dont think anyone of us can do it by owerself. He can book the tickets as well. So take contact to him, he just is the only one who does it and he seem honest and nice guy.

The overall cost for the bike, personal ferry, customs russia and Korea and insurance was about 1200 usd per bike-person which is A LOT!

But its a lot of fun and South Korea is really nice country .. Allthough is not allowed to ride on the highways... So expect lots of funny situations in traffic. I do not think anyone forigner can do the traffic without gps over there!!

We tried hard to get the bikes directly to Anchorage with no success. We sent them to Seattle.

We did it via South Korea, Seoul.
Tried dhl, fedex, wallenius and some other options but ended up with

The service with wooden boxes and customs clearance in US was 3900 usd per two bikes.

We contacted also Wallenius and it should have been a bit cheaper to use them but whe had a time limit and they didnot wanted to hold our bikes over certain time. They donot accept direct contacts, so its better to contact through Wendy Choi. As it was our first choise that didnot worked out we had good contact to Wendy and she is the person to suggest helping customs and paperwork for shure.

Now we are on hold and search the possibilitys to send the bikes from Seattle to Anchorage... If we will not find a reasonable solution we have to drive there and back, which is also not too bad... Anyone knows the optimal solution from Seattle to Alaska? They are still in wooden boxes, it might do it easier?

shipping from UB instead?

after what is written about the crazy shipping situation and costs from vlad I'm wondering why so few people consider shipping from UB instead. It saves you 4000 rather boring km to vlad and you have all the options (rail/sea/air) for what it looks reasonable prices. I'm currently getting quotes from shipping companies for two bikes at the end of Aug, beginning of sept to the US/Canada. Y. Melnikov also told me that there is some kind of political event in Vlad and nothing will go out between Sept. 1st and 15th.

Is anyone up to UB shipping so we could maybe gather some more bikes and get discounts?

Don't forget to tell us about the quotes you get. :thumbup1:
The more options we have the better.

The event in Vlad is the APEC Summit.
You probably don't want to be in town then. I imagine security will be making traffic worse than it usually is.

Try the ferry? Alaska Marine Highway Ferry Ferry Reservations & Tours
Not cheap, but it is a scenic trip.

geordie_e 22 Jul 2012 10:10

Well I have just met with Yuri, what a nice helpful guy.

However I was shocked at the price to get me and my bike to South Korea.

around $1000 !! for an overnight ferry! and I always thought that the $200 price from Newcastle to Amsterdam was overpriced !

It seems there is only one player in this market and the prices have shot up.

Just feel like bending over...... I am sure you all get the picture lol

Hello, I was just wondering if you managed to gain any good quotes for shipping from UB to USA. I am planning a trip next year and trying to weigh all the options up. Many thanks and all the best, Matty.

PedroGomezRios 12 Feb 2013 03:00

Hi...

Please tell us what was your solution... do you finally get quotoes for sipping from UB to USA?

MattyJohnson 12 Feb 2013 10:11

Hello, I did not get any quotes in the end. My plans keep changing all the time.

My current idea is to travel through Russia (and neighbouring countries) then end up in Vladivostock with a view to park the bikes up there for four months. I will then fly myself to USA to complete a little tour on foot/in a camper and then return to Vlad to ride it all backwards again.

I don't suppose anyone has any input to this idea? Can I leave the bikes there for four months?

Thanks again, Matty.

bushman_uk 12 Feb 2013 20:23

Hi Matty,
You could try asking the Vladivostok Iron Tigers , the local motorcycle club www.vladmoto.ru

Not had any contact with them but i have seen them repair a harley in Vlad and help out other travellers .

I fully agree there should be a thread, or that people should report details back here (on the HUBB)because getting hold of the info is a real PITA.

rates have gone up. So far we have had a quote of $4000CAD per bike to fly to Seoul (and that is not as Dangerous Goods, waiting on a quote for that to save us purging the bikes).

Can you get SeanF to post details of contacts, ports etc here (or at least on the shipping info page?). That way there will be less hassle for him being asked questions, and easier for others seeking info.

This is from his blog:
" From Locher Evers International. This does not include crating, which they offer for a price per volumeThe quote states that the starting battery must be disconnected, and the fuel tank no more than 3/4 full. For that quote, the crate dimensions are 218 cm x 86 cm x 111 cm @ 210 kg.

Any HUBB user is free to start a new thread.
If there is a topic you want to discuss, start a thread on it.

If you find a post that is in the wrong thread, let the moderators know and we can move it to the appropriate existing thread.
If a topic is of high importance, we can even make it 'sticky' so it is always at the top of the list.

3500USD, share the shipper please ? That is cheaper than the 4000USD I have been quoted for Vancouver -> Seoul (and then we need to get a boat after that)

calvin.wiley 23 Feb 2013 17:24

The people are Alaska terminals but they contacted the Seattle office to get the cheaper 3500 quote, I don't know the Seattle # but the AK # is 1-907-349-6657 the quote was from Seattle to Vladivostock. If you have a couple people in your party maybe we could share a container? I would just rather buy a another bike than pay 3500 for shipping..

We are 2 bikes and will be wanting to ship out of either Seattle or Vancouver around the 20th -> 25th May.

Does this fit with you ?

Was the 3500USD for the container ? Therefore cheaper with 3 bikes ?

How many days does the container take ?

We are also looking at using the RoRo from Tacoma to Vlad.

calvin.wiley 24 Feb 2013 18:34

3500. US was just for one bike but I think a whole container is around 5000. So if there was three of us that should be under 2k per bike, that would be down where I would consider shipping. I'll get back ahold of a couple different people on mon to see what the cheapest 20' container is from Seattle or Vancouver to Vladivostock and you guys can check too. Maybe we could even find a fourth person to make it even cheaper..

pecha72 24 Feb 2013 20:12

3500-4000 USD to send one motorcycle across the Pacific? I haven´t sent on that route, but sounds a bit steep. And is that for airfreight or seafreight?

(Is it just me, or is every shipment into or out of Vladivostok very expensive)?

I could be the 4th person if you can give a firm ship date and app. arrival date.I was wanting to fly to Korea. But as BruceP said it would save time, trucking, and ferry expenses by going direct to Vlad.

calvin.wiley 25 Feb 2013 18:35

I have called a couple Seattle based companies and they are getting some estimates together, you guys can check as well, the more places we check the better. I would be looking to have my bike depart north America some time in May, hopefully early- mid may but I know a couple of you guys were thinking late may, I wouldn't want to be much after the 20th as I have to be in in Romania by mid July. it takes 20 days to a month ball park to ship the bike and go through customs. To ship a bike you have to have the original title with no bank liens.

That is for air freight to Seoul, no one has come across a direct flight route to Vlad.

Air frieght costs have been going up astronomically in the last couple of years (IMO) so sea freight is becoming a better cost option. If you can find a route.

Containers usually just cost a once off sum and the cost comes down with the more people filling it.

Around the 20th is good for us, but I still prefer the RoRo option as it is a 14 day trip. (The container 20days+ option will be do many days out of our 91max.)

I am still trying to make contact with a shipper to organise it.

No doubt prices will keep going up.

But just as an example, there was someone not so long ago, who sent a mid-sized bike from Kuala Lumpur to Europe (Amsterdam, maybe) by air, and that cost in the region of 1000 euros. Quite reasonable in my opinion. That is a flight time of 10-12 hours, too, so distance is almost comparable to crossing the Pacific.

I know some places will be cheaper to send to/from than others.. and also it´s not certain at all, if I were to fly a similar bike KL->Amsterdam next week, that I would pay the same price! But still, the difference to quotes listed here seems enormous.

Has anyone tried LCL-type seafreight between North America and Korea/Japan/Russia? That should not cost a fortune (but you´re usually required to crate the bike). For reference, I´ve payed (5 years ago) a total ~700 euros to send a DL650 from Sydney to Helsinki. That´s about 15000 kms, as the crow flies. Shipping took 2 months, though. Still I was surprised, that you could actually freight the thing half-way around the planet for that money.

calvin.wiley 26 Feb 2013 18:01

Ok I have got a full quote in from some guys on both ends (Seattle & Vladivostock) these guys are reccomended on the HUBB, they handle a lot of bikes. The TOTAL to ship 4 bikes from Seattle to Vlad will be around 6800. This is a 20ft container that can hold up to 7 bikes. This includes all charges on both ends, customs, loading & securing (no crate nessesary) port fees, agent fees insurance ETC. the base container fee was only 3600. So I got with the guys on both ends to try to get all the litte fees and added everything up so there would be no surprises. The container can hold up to 7 bikes, I figured 4 but each additional bike will be an additional 400. For the bike specific fees but the 6800 would be split by more people.
The time in route will be 18-20 days it goes from Seattle to busan Korea to Vladivostock. With weekly service, let me know if any of you guys are interested!

Indeed, but all we can do is get quotes from freighters and this seems to be what they are quoting.

It would be interesting if anyone from james Cargo was monitoring this and cared to comment.

Agreed, but it is something that is out of our hands to understand. FWI I know it is £1850+ from the UK to Chile.

Rates vary with time. Currently it costs circa £700 to freight a bike by sea (RoRo) from Liverpool to Halifax

Karl, you can't airfreight from Vlad as the planes do not appear to be wide bodied enough.

You can ship (with the bike) via Japan or South Korea.

You will probably want to contact Yuri ( ymelnik <{ATT}> links-ltd {<DOT>} com ) in Vlad to arrange things.

There is a RoRo from Vlad-> Seattle but you cannot go with the bike.

You can take the ferry to South Korea and then have the bike flown to North America. See Wendy Choi for that.

Or, some people prefer to take a short ferry to Japan, ride across there and then a ship them to the USA.

I am travelling from Russia to USA and I have been talking to Uri at Links in Vlad since the planning stage.
He sent me this update today Feb 2014:
I hope it helps fellow travelers.
---------------------------------------
Yuri says:
Vancouver is very popular for shipping. We ship there many vehicles and we have a good agent in Vancouver. At the moment we have no dates but have many inquiries for shipping. We will have information later. The cost depends on number of bikes in container.

Full 20' container costs $5500 (one vehicle) + $300 for every extra bike inside fro blocking/bracing and customs clearance. So you may calculate price yourself. The rate includes loading, blocking/bracing, container trucking to the port, port charges, customs clearance, OTHC, ocean freight.

The rate doesn't include washing (motorcycle must be very well cleaned for Canadian soil inspection), insurance. We can arrange washing.

Also you may go to Korea or Japan on ferry and find the way to ship from there. There is DBS ferry going every Wednesday to Donghae (Korea) and then to Sakaiminato (Japan).
The cost of bike shipping is $600-800, port charges are $100, our fee for customs clearance is $150. Tickets are around $180-250.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

hi ho silver 4 May 2014 16:26

Vlad to San Francisco or Bangkok?

Lots of great info here.
I plan to arrive in Vladivostok end of August, 1200 GSA. Looks like best bet is get to So. Korea (via ferry on Wednesdays) and find way to get from there to either back home to SF or find a way to get bike to "rest" in SE Asia until the winter.

Question 1) Anybody want to get together on a container to SF probably from SO. Korea or Japan? End of August early Sept.

Question 2) Anyone have recent experience advice on flying or shipping out from SO. Korea to US? I know Wendy can help with paperwork.

Question 3) Any info on keeping bike "easily and safely" in SE Asia? Thoughts on that.

Thanks,
Kent

"want to get together on a container"

Pardon my stupidity, but....You sure you will need a whole container to send one motorcycle?

When sending by sea, you can usually* send a crated shipment (bike, furniture, whatever is in it) and it will be calculated based on the dimensions, actual weight & volumetric weight of that particular crate. It will travel on a container in a cargo ship, but there will probably be other shipments in that container, and that´s up to the shipping company to work it out. But bottom line: you don´t pay for the whole container. Would seem complicated to me, to find so many people who want to send their bikes the same way at the same time.

*) I admit I do not know about Vladivostok specifically, but for most seaports it is this way.

I know this is an old post, but do you happen to have Wendy's contact info? I'm looking to get my bike home sometime in September.

Thanks,
Beth

Just another data point. We shipped three bikes from Vlad to Vancouver using Yuri and Svetlana. They were a pleasure to work with. The price per bike was $1800 each, of which $1600 was the ocean freight. At the Vancouver end we paid an additional $610 for each bike for a variety of charges with Gabryelle at Astra International, who is also quite nice. We dropped the bikes off in Vlad the first week of August and they arrived in Vancouver late September. Of course, YMMV!
