Shipping bikes from Toronto to JoBurg
 

Has anyone shipped with South African Airways from Toronto or New York to JoBurg in recent years? I saw a report on the website here covering shipping from Toronto to JoBurg with British Airways, via UK but just looking for possibly less expensive options. Crating in Toronto for two bikes (one crate) is looking very expensive as well at about $1,000 with tax and delivery to airline.
My son and I are planning to head out mid-Sept from Nova Scotia, Canada and we are aslo considering buying bikes in South Africa and reselling or even long term rental if we can get a more reasonable rate. Any advice out there?
We want to ride north on the east side from South Africa to Ethiopia then loop back and around Lake Victoria and back to SA through Botswana, Namibia, etc.
