Shipping the bike from Sydney or Brisbane to LA

As part of my RTW I plan to ship my bike from Australia (either Sydney or Brisbane) to LA. The problem is that I also need to store the bike (at either end) for about 5 weeks while I go and play in Africa.

Does anyone know of a shipping company that will store my bike in either Sydney, Brisbane or LA for 5 weeks in April / May 2009?

Cheers

All shipping companies will do that for you as part of their grouping of freight. It can get expensive though - AU$10 to $15 a day. Ideally you need to find out whats the earliest date that they will receive your bike free of storage charges - sometimes 2 weeks in advance of the sailing, then negotiate the storage charges. If you say you need 35 days storage then they will charge you for that - forgetting that you would not have to pay for at least 14 days.

Its a case of using Yellow Pages to find the best options for your needs.

Bonded storage is expensive

If you are storing it on the LA end without clearing customs it will be very expensive. One option would be to ship it by sea and use the shipping time as your time in Africa. It took 6 weeks for my bike to get from the UK to Phoenix. Another option would be to organize to have it clear customs before being stored in the USA. You will either have to pay out on the customs broker or the bonded storage.
