Hi everyone out there,my plan is to take my bike to argentina in november,the plane seems a good option to me,but how do i find out about the prices?the travelagency did their best but wasn`t of much help.there must be people out there who`ve done this before,please get in contact with me,can`t wait to hear from you,can`t wait to go,cheers

This is a little out of date as it is 10 years since I flew my bike from Montevideo to London but I remember Lufthansa were the airline of choice for flying bikes to or from South America, you might start with them.

Ask Martina from the Villa Kunterbunt in Valparaiso for a quote, the shipping is 4-5 weeks in a crate/container .... you can time it with your flight and if it is delayed, the Villa is the perfect place to hang loose .... :D

I'm from Holland too (Haarlem) and finding out about prices from A"dam to Bogota and from B.A. back again. I'm planning a trip in november also.
To send the bike by air will cost you around € 2000 - € 2500 one way (all inclusive), while sending by sea cargo will be around € 1000.
My best offer by air so far was from James Cargo, but too expensive for me. I'm waiting for an offer by another company.

I've got a few good options by sea cargo from Amsterdam or Rotterdam but keep in mind you'll have to send the bike at least 3 weeks up front. If you're interested let me know, I'll give you some adresses and prices.

does it have to BA ? i just shiped my bike from Suriname to Rotterdam for 495 euros all in and they said that it should be about the same price to ship it back .

I'm planning to ship my bike from Rotterdam to BA Argentina in beginning of october.
Got a deal for €400, (115€/m3) then it's in the harbour of BA. http://www.damco.com/Pages/default.aspx can give you the email adres.
Deliver your bike on friday, sailing on wednesday, arrival 3 weeks later.
I contacted dakar_motos_index if they are able to get the bike into Argentina. Hope they can.
Could anyone recommend, if my first option fails, an other "broker" in Buenos Aires, who can "import" my bike?

Airtransport from Argentina to Europe seems to be cheaper, heart €1000 (in 2007), got an adress if you want.

soundz interesting,could you give me some more info/adresses on the shipping of your bike.Have you tried Peet van Dam in Rotterdam,is he as expensive as wel?2500 one way is far to expensive for me,too.but all the hassel of going to the habour day after day to get the bike out of customs and the hidden costs put me of the idea of sending the bike by ship.

For me it's the first time to South America too, did send my bike to Australia but thats completely different.
Why by seafreight, air is probably way more expensive, trying to find out.
But as it seems Damco will send your bike by sea for €400, air will cost at least €1000 (300KG non-dangerous goods), at this end.
In Argentina habour could be, according to Sandra from "Dakar Motos", a max of $700 (€560) more expensive as airfreight, though I don't expect this a big difference, allthough "Dakar Motos" prefer airfreight by sea seems to be cheaper.
The hassle of getting your bike in worried me too, but Sandra from Dakar Motos reassured me, she is going to "import" the bike with me.
Harbour seems to take abit longer as airport, few days.

Lady from Lufthansa told me "normal" airfreight is €3,13/KG, tough a motorbike is marked as dangerous goods and handled differently.
Maybe you could get around the "dangerous goods" part if you send your petrol tank by sea. As sparepart to "Dakar Motos" for instance.
Would still give you the advantage of "quick" import.

Also oil etc must be removed from the motorbike to make a chance on non-dangerous goods : ( .

Costs on the Argentinean side:
CMA gives you a bill in US dollars [US$] which has to be paid at a bank downtown. We paid CMA the following:
- River Plate Toll US$ 90
- THC Destino US$120
- Logistics fee US$ 30.25
- Delivery Order US$ 54.45
- Total costs, including tax = US$ 294.70

At the Terminal [TRP] we paid the following in pesos. Strangely enough the bill is in US dollars, but payment can only be made in pesos!
- Verification US$ 193.60
- Cargo de seguridad US$ 9.68
- Devolucion mty importacion US$ 24.20
- Cargo manipuleo US$ 110.11
- Tasas a las cargas impo US$ 3.63 per ton US$10.89
- Total costs, including tax: US$ 348.48 = 1081 pesos.

If you get stuck at the Argentinian end, I really recommend contacting Sandra from Dakar Motos. She will do all the "fixing" and make it all go smooth for a very reasonable price. Shes WAY cheaper than the office based agents and twice as honest and friendly.
