Is it safe to Ride through Panama, Columbia into Ecuador?

Hi There

I am riding from the Bonneville Salt Flats in UTAH and hope to complete somewhere like Rio De Janeiro....

I am not over concerned about any countries that l travel through RE safety, l have just had last few years working in London, knife crime is rife ha....

Basically - can anyone advise if l should fly the bike from Panama to Equador? ORRRR is there a safe route to just pick-up the highway and make my way along the coast?

Any thought for or against overland would be appreciated.....

Any tips on where to ship bike by either plane or boat and ball-park cost for 1x person and 1x bike.....

Look forward to your thoughts guys and girls?

Cheers
Danny.

I'd get a boat from Panama to Cartagena, Colombia, much more fun than flying.

Plenty of threads for the boats, someone posted a new one quite recently.

If you are looking into the sailing option, make sure the roads have been re-opened due to all the flooding Panama has had over the last week. We had a sailing booked for last week and after 2 attempts of trying to get to the boat pick-up point, we decided to fly instead. I was really looking forward to the sailing though. Now in Colombia.

Columbia to Panama

We have just arrived in Panama on 2 Xt 600,s arriving by boat from Cartegena and arriving at Colon 4 days ago
Yes there is flooding here at the moment but all the paved roads are passable
We had a great trip on board the yacht wild card, the bikes were loaded and secured very well.Spent a few days in the San blas islands, in all a great and worthwhile addition to our RTW trip
Re safety travelling down to Ecuador, we expierienced no problems at all.
Oh by the way there are some great guys in quito, part of horizons comunity, well worth contactig, we had several ride outs with them, real nice people
Hope this helps Pete

How much did the trip cost for you and bike? Do you have a contact for them... I assume they are sailing back to Colombia soon?

Thanks everyone for your advice - perfect! I think sailing would be more fun, that's my preferred option, but l am not going to over think it till l arrive in Panama as l am sure so many things can change for the worse or better.....but your feedback proves that its all good fun and the route is well connected...

Cheers
Danny.

somebody earlier in the thread put his face book details on, otherwise just google it mate,
Hope this helps, Pete

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
