Roll on Roll off ships

Has anyone had any luck with roll on roll off vessels. I have found a shipper that will ship bikes from Montreal/Halifax etc. to Europe etc. for roughly $500 Can I figured the chances of your bike being unloaded at its destination are greater due to the visability of cargo rather than it being lost and confused in a container.

Shipping by sea is O.K., if you have unlimited time at your disposal. But if you want to be sure to have the bike at the other end when you want it, air freighting is the only way. Check out Kuehne&Nagel in Toronto what they can do for you. I shipped with them (3 times) Ottawa-London on the daily AC flight. Cost: about Can.$1,000, total. Air Canada puts bike into its own see-through container. At the other end you clear customs and take bike out of the container yourself. Cheaper than Motorcycle Express.

Thanks Werner that's a reasonable price by air Motorcycle express charges far too much. I could put that money towards buying a bike in Europe.

Hi Kurt,

we are just about to use one of these ferrys to ship from Panama, have met others who have used them from Europe to Canada with no probs.

The price is very good by the way, and none of this mucking about with crates.

Will post here on the HUBB when we have our bikes back in one piece!!

Sian..

Who is the shipper you used in Montreal/ Halifax? I need to ship mine to UK for the summer. Montreal is within spitting distance! More or less....

Hi Kurt and Kitcross

Try Wallenius Wilhelmsen, who have been recommended by travellers for RO/RO ships, especially between Europe and North America.

Here are the details for their Halifax office, which is now the head office for Canada. Gary Merlin, Manager Canada, Wallenius Wilhelmsen, 1099 Marginal Road, Suite 200, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada B3H 4P7, toll free phone in Canada (877) WWLA-CAN or (877) 995-2226, phone (902) 425-2873, fax (902) 425-9820.

Good luck and don't forget to fill out the Shipping Form when you complete your shipment, for the benefit of future travellers.

Thanks

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
