Ship BA to UK?
 

I have investigated the shipping section, and this forum, and haven´t had too much luck on this specific journey apart from some company names and oldish posts..

Can anyone who has done this trip recently please recommend anyone, or better yet give me prices/tel nos/names/procedure? I´m looking to send a KLR back to britain at the end of november, and really need to get on the case..

Also I hear you can get away with paying less import tax in the UK if you get the shipping company to ´officially´ write the value of the bike as something very low (due to wear & tear, or whatever) -any truth/experience in this dept? (the bike is registered in Cali) Or can i register is as ´off road´ and keep it in a garage for a while until i´m back in May, next year?

Anyone want to share container space from Buenos Aires to the UK, soon? It will reduce the cost...

I doubt Her Majesties Customs people will pay any attention to a valuation by an Argentinean shipping company. They'll look at the "blue book" valuation. Parkers I think it is in the UK - and go from that. You can argue high mileage and scratches etc.

And you don't have to register it in the UK AT ALL until you want to ride it. Then you will have to register it and MOT it etc. SORN (Statutory Off-Road Notice) is not required until the bike has been registered in the first place.

Re shipping - crating and shipping it will be much cheaper than a whole container, and less hassle too.

BEFORE you send it back, check with Customs and the DVLA that you CAN register it in the UK - you MAY not be able to at all! You certainly could NOT register it in Canada or the US for sure.

Finally, is it worth it at all? Why not sell it there?

The thing is, the KLR is Californian plated, so I cannot legally sell it here in Argentina without trying to import it officially and permanently. According to Javier at Dakarmotos, selling it on the sly will mean practically giving it away -and i will need wheels when i get back to the UK anyway.
Thanks for the warning of possible refusal for registry in england -i will phone dvla again to check and customs again too.
As for the shipping, i have found out (again through Javier and Sandra, who have so far been very helpful) that a container can fit about 6 bikes, and that this would be cheaper per bike than individual crating..
I have mine and two others so far, and need another 3 to make this happen.
