Purchase bikes in Germany and then sell in Cape Town??

Hi there,

We would love some advice on the option of purchasing our bikes in Germany (instead of shipping bikes over) (we are Australian) and then selling them in Cape Town, South Africa at the end of our trip 9 months later (or thereabouts).

Does anyone have advice on import / export taxes etc from Germany, and does the Carnet deposit then cover the sale in South Africa (in terms of taxes)?

Also - advice on German vehicle registration costs / process / requirements would be appreciated too.

Thanks :thumbup1:

As far as I know, if you don't return your carnet with the removal stamp from South Africa, you will lose your deposit and be in all sorts of trouble...

Plus, the new owner wouldn't be able to leave South Africa with the bike as it would be foreign registered without a carnet so it would also be illegal for them..

Sorry, no idea about taxes.

only from a price point of view.... if you're going to buy bikes in Europe, you would be much better off to buy them in the UK right now. So many bikes are getting brought in the UK and shipped to The Netherlands and Germany etc as the pound's value has dropped massively making them absolute bargin.

You cannot sell foreign registered 2nd hand vehicles and bikes in South Africa.

But you probably could in Swaziland, Transkei, South West Africa, or any other southern hemisphere country with south africa as its border.

SWA would be a good bet for a german registered bike. It's german territory SWA.

I am not sure but I do not think Transkei exists anymore, but there is also
