Port taxes and such

Hi, Im just in the process of shipping my bike to Buenos Aires Argentina by most probably sea. Does anyone know of the hassles and charges at the port once its there. Also if I ship by air does this reduce the charges at the other end and hassles. Ive a quote from scotland to BA of £297 by sea £1000 by air which seems reasonable. Someone also said the crate has to be made of heat treated and fumigated wood, is this right?

Hi JJ, £297.00 seems an incredibly cheap deal, who is the shipping agent? At the other end get Xavier and Susan at Dakar Motors to handle things at the dock, they have looked after lots of Hubbers. I believe fees are less at the airport I think I paid around £100.00 3 years ago although I had a bit of an argument with the customs about carnets, you don't need one for anywhere in the Americas and yes the crate must be made of suitable materials. I will be back in St Andrews from the Americas end of June if you want to come up for a weekend and talk about the Americas please feel free. Ride safe, :mchappy:
