Panama to Columbia (feb/mar '10)
We are travelling 4x4, already have some contacts for sharing a 40' High Cube into Columbia towards end of Feb
BUT . . . . . . . . . . Have been told that there is a 'banana boat' working back n forth to the Coco Solo dock/port at Colon (Panama), aparently they have ramps on one of the ships used ( Elizabeth 111 ) and so possible to 'easily' drive either car or bike onto boat. Again aparently these ships are 'happy' to shift vehicle AND humans!!!! at very reasonable cost (i know a guy who was quoted $300 for his landrover 110 about 2 weeks ago). However, this option takes a bit of 'on the ground' sorting !!! ??? My question really is to ask is anybody aware of this route and does anybody have ACTUAL knowledge / contact with somebody that has done it ? Timing wise if a few of us (bikes and 4x4s) can combine it should enable an easier arangement and safer processing and of course we all save money ! Phil. I know two seperate people who've moved 4x4s into Panama this year (2010) and so I have cost and details etc, anybody need ? |

Well we are in Costa Rica, proving VERY difficult to get any let alone accurate information on banana boat option. Was really hoping posting here would shed some light from another user, ahh well ! I think it's going to be one of those situations where you need to be in the port and talk to people 'on the ground' ('water'!), so to speak. I will post as i get any info. However . . . . . . . For motorbikers I have good reports on this outfit : www.stahlratte.org: Logbuch they have their boat leaving Panama on 9th April arriving 16th. and stopping few days around San Blas, price looks ok and keeps you with yer bike which is worth alot! I am already in Colombia (and I took the easy route= I FLEW!) I normally do not post cautionary tales, but I think ben has posted this here on HU? I subscribe to Ben Slavin's "www.afewmoremiles.com" and met him on the road--his Darien crossing was S-C-A-R-Y AND I post a link here to his crossing with an unscrupulous captain.. Panama Info
Sorry to jump into this conversation with a tangent but I am having a hard time getting the info that I need elsewhere and was hoping that someone actually in Central Amer. can help me out.
I am wondering if I can impose on one of you that are now or will soon be in Panama. I am wondering how long this country will allow me to leave my moto without being there to extend permits. I am wanting to ride from my home in Canada in March and want to leave my bike there until Dec when I can return and continue south. How long can I leave it in storage there? Also if you run into a suitable place for secure storage please pass this info along as well. Thanks folks! cheers, Craig |
