Most travellers have found that air shipment is not significantly more expensive than sea for motorbikes, and much more certain to get your bike where you need it to be when you want it there. I still have memories of shipping our motorcycle to Auckland and discovering when we arrived that the port was on strike, so it took over a week to get it on the road!

The following are air freight contacts, but the shipping companies will usually offer both air and sea options:

One of our regular travellers has had good results with the folks below, shipping from Auckland to Buenos Aires. They also ship elsewhere, so good place to start.

Stuart Elliott, Airfreight Manager
AFS Freight Management (NZ) Ltd
1st Floor 131 Montgomerie Rd Airport Oaks Auckland
0-9-916 0650
stuart.elliott@afsnz.co.nz

They are also in Wellington (but not in Christchurch, unfortunately):

AFS / Green Freight Wellington Ltd
cnr Kingsford Smith Street & Tirangi Road Rongotai, Wellington 0-4-387 1056

Others have used Panalpina with good results, and they also ship from NZ:

Panalpina World Transport Pty Ltd
13 Freight Pl Mangere Auckland
Phone: 0-9-275 6175

Panalpina is a European company, with a number of UK offices. The following is their head office in the UK:

Panalpina World Transport Ltd.
Panalpina House
Great South West Road
Feltham Middlesex TW14 8NU
UNITED KINGDOM
+44 (208) 5879000

Next I would try the cargo offices of Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines in Christchurch.

I'd suggest you get at least 3 quotes, and be sure to grill them about their experience in shipping motorcycles.

Hope this helps, and when you connect please don't forget to send us the details so we can add it to our Shipping page for other travellers to use!

Cheers

Another one which sounds very promising, but cannot give any references for them:

"Excess International Movers is a specialist shipper of personal baggage, household possessions and motor vehicles worldwide. No matter how large or how small, we can collect your belongings from anywhere in New Zealand and airfreight or seafreight them to any destination you choose.

Customs clearances and delivery of your consignment to your home, office, or wherever, is easy - simply ask and we will organise it.

Excess International Movers has offices throughout New Zealand and the United Kingdom, plus a worldwide network of carefully selected overseas partners, who like ourselves are specialists in handling personal and household items."

As they mention motor vehicles, I would be very interested to know how you get on with them.

Keep in touch.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
