Iran or Dubai or Oman to India

Hey,

We are in istanbul and headed for Iran, we have been on the road for over 3 months and so getting a visa for Pakistan at home could not happen and we have found out it is nearly impossible to get a visa at the border or from a foreign country.

SO we are looking at other options, does anyone know if there is some sort of passenger ferry from Iran, Dubai or Oman?

If not we are considering flying freight from Dubai to Nepal, we have heard India can be a handful for getting things released from customs.

Thanks in advance - all ideas welcome from people who have done it already!!

James

At least a few years ago there weren´t any international ferry lines to/from India. This year they actually started one after a long break – but it goes to Sri Lanka!

There are actually a lot of people, especially from southern India, working in the Gulf region, but I guess the distances are too big for any ferries to operate (and compete against airlines).

Sending as freight to India should be possible, but prepare yourself for several days of hard work at the receiving end, before your vehicle is released! And you´ll 100% need the carnet.

Me, I´d still push the Pakistani visa option, and only freight, if I simply could not do anything else.

Try Teheran

Hi James,

We couldn't get the Pakistani visa in Istanbul either (Nov 2008) but it was quite easy to obtain it in Teheran. We had to wait for 3 days and the price was about 90US each.

Normally it should cost you about 30US, but we were told they increased the prices because The Netherlands (we are Dutch) increased theirs as well. Not so sure about that, but what can you do... Still way cheaper than taking the ferry.

Good luck and enjoy Iran, it's an amazing country!

Cheers,
Don

thanks, we are in the process of trying to sort freight from Dubai to either Nepal or India (Deli), we should be leaving here in about 2 weeks time.

Since you are heading into Winter now may I suggest you spend it in UAE & Oman. It's an amazing place to visit. You could try for the Pak visa in Abu Dhabi where I got mine in 2007. Failing that, try to get it at home (courier and friends/family).
