Information from Chile to Australia

Hi
My wife and I are currently making the above mensioned crossing, and struggled to get information about it before hand. Therefore I would like to share our experience and costs with those of you planning and budgeting on a similar crossing. I think that the prices to get to New Zealand would be similar.
Prices are for two people and one big motorcycle (1150GS). Prices are in US$. The flight tickets we bought was at a special rate with conditions. Return flight tickets was cheaper, and the return flights must be in less that 3 months from your flight there. (not that we plan on using the return ticket) So keep that in mind when you enquire for tickets.

$2200 Flight tickets on LAN airlines from Santiago to Aukland (NZ) (add another $1000 for normal, non special, rates)
$200 Estimated flight tickets between Aukland and Melbourne
$10 Bike pressure wash and WD40
$150 Cost of the crate for the bike, made by local agent (Enzo and Martina)
$130 Cost of agent (Enzo and Martina) to do customs clearence and running around
$30 Transport cost to transport the crate for the bike from agents house to the Container Yard, bike had to be ridden there, not nice after you just spent two full days cleaning it
$65 Custom clearence cost at port
$1060 Actual shipping cost of bike (to Melbourne, Australia), measured at 3.7cbm (only removed screen and mirrors) This include an extra, and optional insurance fee of $70 for total loss. You dont need to pay this if you wish to save $70

That brings the total to $3845, and does not include accomodation.

Accomodation in Valparaiso will cost you about $37 per night in Enzo and Martinas hostal. We found a hostal for $30, where we stayed at while in Valparaiso.

For the record, we got a quote to airfreight the bike using Quantas Cargo, and it would have been less than a $1000 more.

I hope this information helps you doing your budget.
See you down under. . . .:taz:

Thanks for the info, i´ll be doing the same in November, although thinking about shipping to Brisbane? then riding down to Melbourne.
I guess direct flights from Santiago are limited to Melbourne and/or Sydney?

Enzo and Martina can arrange shipping to any location, so I dont think Brisbane would be a problem.
I dont know about direct flights, as we wanted to visit Aukland. We have 55 days to kill before the bike arive, so never enquired about direct flights.

Hope you get a good rate.
