Question Hong Kong to Kazakhstan

I've read some the posts by travellers who have shipped their bikes for several hundred dollars to various parts of the world.

So I must be doing something wrong - because all the quotes I get for shipping from Hong Kong to Astana, Kazakhstan - whether by sea, air or land - are in excess of $3,500 US What could I be doing wrong?

Maybe sending to a place, that´s a bit off from the main freight routes, therefore upping your costs significantly? But yeah, quotes can differ a lot, too, if you need to send it there, you´ll just need to keep asking around.

Well the sea part aint gonna help you much - since it is the furthest capital city from the ocean, on earth .. and air freight out of East Asia is extremely expensive (its cheap going to East Asia but expensive the other way)

But trucking it should be dirt cheap. A group of Dutch people are transporting bikes from HOlland to Astana in July ... its being shipped from Europe to China ... then land freighted across CHina and Kazakhstan to Almaty ... and thats all for about 500 EUR per bike.

So land freighting it should cost you much less than that. 400 bux tops. You just have to find a shipper with regular runs to Astana.

Cheers!

Thanks! I'll keep my hopes alive then and look for land shippers.

I don't suppose you know the shipping company they are gonna use on the China to Kazakhstan leg of their journey?

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
