From San Francisco to SE Asia

I'm shipping my bike from San Francisco to Singapore in November. I wondering if anyone has experiance with freight forwarders for this origination / destination combination ?

I have an offer for shipping my '98 Triumph Tiger for about 1050 USD by air.

Hi Mark

We don't have any information on that particular combination. But, I have sent an e-mail query to Jesselton Shipping, a company in Singapore who have handled shipments to/from Australia for motorcycle travellers to see if they have an agent in San Francisco.

When deciding on the costs between air and sea shipment, remember that the transit time by sea is a minimimum of 3 weeks, during which time you will be without the bike at one end or the other. Considering it cost us US$1,400 to ship from San Francisco to Frankfurt 5 years ago, I think your air quote sounds pretty good. Ideal is if you can fly on the same plane as the bike.

Good luck and safe travels!

For information, sailings are from Oakland weekly, taking about 20 days to get to Sing.

Thanks for the feedback Susan, here some updated information I got from the Agent:

Due to the current situation airlines are reluctant to ship dangerous goods. My agent informed me that they could not find an airline willing to accept a DG shipment from an "unknown" shipper (that is a party which has no long shipping history with the Agent / Airline). Therefore I had to switch to sea shipment.

My bike is now going out on 10/26 and should be in Singapore in 21 days. New total cost is 615 USD.

Does anyone know what costs I have to expect while clearing customes in Singapore ?

Mark
