Freighting Sydney to London

Just for information purposes. I have just arranged for my bike to go by sea to Tilbury, UK and had a good experience......so far!

I used Crossocean Freight, namely Maria Moro tel: 02 9666 9220 (main switch).

Process as follows:

Take carnet to Customs Cargo Export Dept - ULM House, Link Road, Mascot - just near the airport terinal.
Book Export Exam at the export warehouse that Crossocean specify.
Meet Customs Officer there to witness exam and retrieve carnet.
Close the crate and walk away!

I just paid AU$650 brokendown as follows:

Dimensions are: 62cm x 132cm x226cm = 1.85cubic metres
Crating AUD$308.00 (Includes GST)
Freight: AUD$277.50
Documentation: AUD$65.00
Total: AUD$650.50

The crate was big enuff to contain the whole bike with only the mirrors removed. I put 2 panniers and a top box in too!

No insurance as you can see. That would have been another hundred odd bucks.

I will keep you posted on the state of arrival.

We shipped our DL650 from Sydney to Helsinki by sea in April 2008, using Tradelanes (Home: Tradelanes Global Solutions). It all worked out pretty good, we had taken care of the crating before leaving the bike to the freight company. Tradelanes is actually located in Melbourne, but they used an agent, DS Harrington, in St.Peters, Sydney, to handle the transport of the crate to the port, and we could also handle payments and everything straight with them, which was convenient for us.

It cost some 480 euros at the Australian end (including insurance), plus they legally robbed us of 180 more in Helsinki for some port handling fees, etc. Still quite tolerable, I think. By air it seemed it would´ve been at least 1500 euros.

They originally estimated 42 days to Helsinki, which I doubted a little in the first place, and then received a notice from them, that it had missed a boat in Singapore, and will be re-routed via Gothenburg, then by truck to Helsinki (was originally routed to Hamburg, then Helsinki). It then arrived after about 65 days, a few days before the new ETA, in good condition.
