Freighting Australia to South America
 

Howdy all,

Does anyone have any up to date information on shipping/freighting from Australia to South America. I'm looking at air freight and so far have contacted Qantas, BTI Logistics and soon CT Freight and am waiting on quotes.

All information in the shipping section seems out of date and most are from NZ to SA.

If anyone has done this recently I'd love to know so I can get my baby DR and myself over. And also any info on cheapest airlines and times to travel would be great. Having trouble finding cheap flights in February!

P.S. Qantas quoted "Brisbane - Santiago or Buenos Aires $2256.00 - Including Freight, Dangerous Goods Certificate and Terminal Handling fees. This is based upon the dimensions of the box that you have provided, therefore on 184kg by volume. If these change the price will change accordingly."

Qantas informed me they would only ship a new bike. Is that the info you got as well?

The Qantas lady never informed me of this. I mentioned I wanted to ship my bike to SA and thats most of what she sent back. No mention of new bike. I spose what you mean by new bike is brand new in the crate?

i just shipped from australia to southamerica with ct-freights/Sydney.
its not yet arrived so i cant say if it worked out fine but the job done in oz was fast and cheap n mr. namroud is reliable partner

Sydney to Santiago de Chile, 65 days shipping on boat:

Freight $ 400.00 aud per cubic meter

cartage $ 55.00 aud & $ 35.00 aud

handling $ 85.00 aud

carnet inspection $ 150.00 aud


my bike was 2,2 cubic (transalp)

no idea about the port-charges in Chile!

What are your plans. ie. what are you doing while your waiting for your bike to get there/arrive. Are you still in Aus. Also what are your plans for riding in SA. Might bump into you at some stage as im flying out and freighting on the 3rd Feb to Santiago. When is your bike due to arrive?

I hope for your best for the port of Chile to be friendly with your bike and port costs! ;)

Personally I'm thinking about paying the extra 1000 to freight over to save the hastle of port charges and time in lieu

i use the time for making travel-holiday at home:palm: and getting prepared for the trip. my bike is supposed to arrive middle of december, i hope to hit the road on christmas-newyear towards patagonia but planning depends on many other things too..

Ah you see thats where my problem lies. To SHIP out of Aus (because i live here and work here) would require me to either drive my bike down to Brisbane (I live in Charters Towers west of Townsville) and fly back 60 days before I wanted it overseas OR get it transported down. Both of which ways I'd have to fly down later to leave myself. All costly. And i'm working until the day I leave as well which makes it difficult.

Otherwise I could just be without my bike for 60 days...but I don't like the sound of that too much :P If it works for you though...good stuff! What bike is yours by the way? Transalp 650?

Try DHL. I was quoted NZD4.60/kg to BA in Argentina last week.
My DR650 leave next week :-)

Do they also organise customs clearances for dangerous goods?

I think that there might be little 'gotchas' in the fine print with DHL. If you do go with them then please report back with full details as others here would be very interested.
