Hi guys

Found a ship that leaves Miami every Friday to Cartagena in Colombia.

Takes 3-4 days, do not take passengers, bike need to be crated as it goes in a shared container. Shipping company can do this. They can also handle all papers for customs in both ends. Way cheaper than the airplane I took, which ended up in 1950 dollars in total...argggh!!

I was considering riding from NWT or ALASKA from the Artic Ocean down to TDF. However, it may be better to ride up from there, I am not positive.
What do you think is the best way ship down or ship back? Also, time of year? Im guessing (depending on the route) Late Aug would be a good time to leave, hitting Mexico mid sept and CA by mid/End Sept SA by Late Sept ot Early Oct. Any pointers?

Well, if you're going all the way down you need to be in Argentina/Chile by November/December as summer is started. Otherwise its to cold. I had to turn around trying to go down early October. Got rained away and was frying my ass of!

I only had 6 days of rain going north from Chile all the way to the US, so I recommend going north from Chile in november, then you are dry all the way up ;-)

I ended up flying with Arrow Airlines. The shipping agent where GDL logistics situated in Miami Airport. He managed to damage my bike and panniers and refused to compensate, so I argued with him for over 6 month with out result. He's and idiot. Anyway his also the guy that knows about the boat to Cartagena.

Mike,
Probably you must include Port fees and clearance in Cartagena, around same amount as US. (+- $150). There is also a pro-rate
And one more think some customs don't like to see (1) bill odf landing when there is many vehicles together. The owner or the agent must be there.

I would like to confirm how easy and fast is Cartagena port, that's the trick an I will use it in the future. Venezuela is terrible by experience.

As a Chilean let me tell, You should hit Chile October. Setember is a little cold yet. better November to end of March . Yuo should be at parallel 33 by end of March.
Chile is not reallly cold as North North America, it is like Virginia weather or Carolinas in winter. However between April and August expect daily fine rain down south of Santiago

My 2 cents

I am looking into shipping a bike from Miami to either Cartegena or Bogota this June or July. Does anyone have any other experience with this? I am a new member so I cannot send PMs yet. So if Kaiser sees this please send me a PM so I can get some info. I am moving to Colombia for 2 years min. and have a beautiful xr650r here in the states. So why should I buy a little 200cc putter down there?

Well, I hope you have checked out the law about temporary importation.

You can only keep a foreign registered bike in Colombia for up to 6 month per calender year on a tourist VISA. If you get a residency VISA because you marry, work or study, you can not bring in a vehicle at all.

Its illegal to import a used vehicle to Colombia (except on the tourist tempory import permit).

So unless you plan to go out of the country for 6 month per year on the bike, I suggest you find another solution.

Concerning the shipping agent he never gave me the details for contacting the boat only the quote. He helped arrange to fly my bike down with Arrow Airlines, but after he dropped the bike during crating and since have refused to compensate for the damage I'm not going to give him any business!

All I know is that a boat leaves every week for Cartagena from Miami port and its possible to get a crated bike in a shared container. I suggest going to the port in Miami and asking around!

Nevermind, just read the rest of the thread, and kaiserkyhl says he is not interested in chasing down the details, due to a previous disagreement with a shipping agent.
