People entering the UAE through Sharjah from Oman or Iran occasionally report extra bureaucracy and needless delays. It's an unusual quirk of the UAE that each emirate has its own nation-like border and customs controls. Sharjah also bans the importation of alcohol, which is no problem to take into Abu Dhabi or Dubai. Update on the ferry from Bandar Abbas to Sharjah
We just took the ferry from Bandar Abbas to Sharjah. Here is how it went:
We got to Bandar Abbas one day before (currently there are two departures a week - on Monday and Wednesday). We were directed to the office of South Line Shipping Company where we bought tickets for ourselves (US 107 per person, includes supper and breakfast) and paid for the motorcycle freight (US 200). The office is some 2-3 kilometers from the port on the main road to city centre, a big white building. On the day of departure we got to the port by 9 AM. Customs procedures were a nightmare, spent the whole day running around and had it done by 5 PM. Port fees totalled some 500 000 rials (US 50). The ferry left at around 11 PM and arrived in Sharjah at around 8 AM. Passengers were only allowed to leave the ferry some two hours later when the cargo had been offloaded. On the UAE side, various fees again (be sure to take a receipt about having paid for the freight in Bandar Abbas, otherwise you will be charged!!!) - USD 89 for the delivery order and around US 20 for customs clearance. Spent there some two hours before we could leave the port area. Bottom line - it may sound easy going from Bandar Abbas to Sharjah on a ro-ro ferry, but be prepared to spend quite some time on paperwork. Try not to arrive in Bandar Abbas too early though - this place is dirty and overpriced, not much like the rest of Iran. And very few hotels have safe parking. Oh, and it is hot and humid too! |
Bandar Abbas to Sharjah Ferry
I booked into a hotel (Amin on the front...not a great place, but a bed at least) in Bandar Abbas and after a very welcome shower, went to find a travel agency that Lonely Planet recommended. The temperature is in the mid 40s and as humid as anything and the healthy walking option soon became a silly idea, but it was too late and I arrived at the agency not looking or feeling my best. I was offered lots of tissues.
This is when I was told that the ferry was full for a week, I could not f....ing believe it. Nothing in what i had read or understood had given any hint of it getting booked up so. It was when she did not know about the bike's price that I started thinking that there was a lot of communication failure getting in the way. It was too late by then to do anything other than go back to the hotel. I got on one of their very slow Internet pcs to see if I could glean some more. Luckily I found a new thread on Horizons Unlimited (Thanks Margus) that thankfully gave the shipping company name and address, which are: South Shipping line office Boulevard Iman Khomeini, Sorou Area, B. A. Co ordinates: N. 27 09.261 E. 056 12.243 The coordinates for Shahid Bahonar Docks, (4km west of Bandar Abbas). N. 26 09 266 E. 056 12.279 So along I went in the morning at 8.30. What followed was a near 10 hour bureaucratic trail that took me to over 20 offices for parts of a puzzle that I had absolutely no idea had to do with what. At last by six in the evening I had my passenger ticket and Batty was ready for embarkation. 2 hours was spent sitting around and another 2 involved going back to the hotel to check out and collect Batty, but it had been a marathon. I read of others taking half a day. Once the process was in play and I was confident that I would go that evening, I was surprised at how relaxed I was, pretty confused but relaxed. All the guys in the process were warm natured and happy to take this dumb foreigner through the ordeal. The night before I had been on quite a decline with the prospect of a week in one of the hottest most humid places I had encountered. Update on the ferry form Iran to U.A.E

--------------------------------------------------------- Ok, here is how we got our Land Rover Defender 110 from Bandar Abbas in Iran to Sharjah in U.A.E.. This ferry connection is at the moment, to my knowledge anyway, the only option if you want to get your vehicle across. We arrived in Bandar Abbas a few days before we wanted to ship out. The ferry departs from Bandar Abbas every Monday and Wednesday. Be aware – they change the schedule as they like, so try to double check the departure days, if you are short on time. There is very little official information about this ferry line on the internet, but we managed to find out that it is the government owned Valfajre-8 that runs the shipping line. With no address on a ticket office (impossible to find), we just drove out to the Shahid Bahonar Docks, where the ferry is leaving from. It is situated 4km west outside Bandar Abbas. Here we were sent back towards the city, to a company called: “South Line Shipping Company”. The exact GPS location of their office is: N 27°09.957 E 056°13.787 Here they acted as they had never shipped a car before, but assured us that it was the right place. After a LOT of confusion, and visiting 8-10 different offices, we finally were able to talk to the right guy. The crossing would cost us 600USD for the car. South Line Shipping Company was NOT able to sell us the passenger tickets, but a different office in the same building could. The price here was 100USD pr. person. We had booked for a Monday departure, and South Line Shipping Company asked us to be at the Shahid Bahonar Docks at 08.00am. The ferry would depart at 09.00pm. So we had to be there 13 hours before departure! A very long story short, the car was first ready for loading (RO/RO ferry) at 06.00pm. Luckily we were told it would be a good idea to hire a “handler” to take us through the paperwork. Honestly, we would never have succeeded in doing all the paperwork without him. Keep in mind that NOBODY speaks English, and that all the paperwork is in Persian. Handlers can be hired for around 50USD, and is essentially just cabdrivers, that also offer this service. They can normally be found at the entrance to the harbor. The handler and I went from office to office to office – no kidding – I lost count at 14 offices! Really the best 50 bucks I ever spent. Totally the costs on the Iranian side were just about 200USD. Please remember that VISA and MasterCard’s etc. is NOT accepted in Iran, due to sanctions from USA. So cash only (Rials or USD). The docking went smooth, I was asked to drive aboard myself. The ferry itself is not new, but not too bad. The name of the vessel we went on was Hormuz 14. On our crossing there were plenty of seats (no cabins, only flight-like seats); despite rumors saying it is overcrowded. We were served supper and a light breakfast. Both quite good, defiantly a lot better than most in-flight food I’ve been served! Tuesday at 09.00am we arrived in Sharjah, about an hour’s drive from Dubai. The crossing had caused a lot of people getting seasick, and the toilets were flooded with all sorts of things. Passengers have to wait until all the cargo has been set ashore. Took almost 2 hours! The customs on both sides went smooth for us (and we have a loaded car!). But still, everything takes heaps of time in this part of the world. To get our vehicle released we had to use a shipping agency called Good Luck Shipping LLC. They have a small container office right where the ferry docks in Sharjarh. They did most of the paperwork for us. Ok then, hope our experience can be of help to other travelers. Cheers Michael |
Myself and two French have just done it. You can see some of a the paperwork here. The price and the bureaucracy are disgusting and they'll be sure to have you waiting till 2pm so that they can charge overtime. In total it was about £250 each.
Andrew Charnley I found out that Iran Air will happily fly your bike for 1/5 the price (for a 125cc scooter!) to Dubai airport. They don't have carnet facilities but ours got stamped at the port customs before all the paperwork crap and we could have easily have just left. Carnet is not needed for UAE. Bike must have petrol and oil drained for flying. |
