Emission test on arrival in USA??

Hello all,

my bike is crated and wending its way slowly across the Atlantic, due to arrive in Miami on 25th January. I've just heard a rumour that the bike may be subjected to an exhaust emission test before it's allowed into the USA. This has come completely out of left field - anybody heard of it? It's a 2002 R1150GS Adventure with 42k miles on it. What worries me is that it has had the Cat removed.....

Any help appreciated...

Mike

Hi Mike,

We shipped into LA in Sept 03, no-one even looked at the bikes, we took them out of the crates and rode away.
Maybe the rules change from state to state, but I wouldnt worry about it too much.
The guys at the harbour were much more interested in our trip.

Have a good trip,
Sian

Hi Mike
same for me. I shipped my tenere into LA in december and not a single customs officer looked at it.I had it cleared three days before i picked it up.
Florida has no emission rules that i am aware of, definitely not as strict as california.
I am in Orlando at the moment so if you have any troubles i may be able to help and if not give me a shout anyway.

Have no worries on the emissions front. I hope you made sure your bike was clean; no, I mean scrupulously immaculate. My pal had his BMW steam cleaned and trailered it to the docks. Before I flew my Pan to Vancouver, I took the wheels off and scrubbed every nook and cranny I could find. It's all to do with foot & mouth...

Mike,

No personal experience here, but I have heard the same rumors you heard. What concerns me is the above folks were not re-importing their US bikes, they were bringing in Temporary Imports, which may not fall under the same guidelines as a US registered bike.

If you run into a problem, you could always borrow an exhaust from a buddy for a few days and instal at the port...

Suerte,
C & E
