any info on shipping bikes from Panama to California?

we are two KLR riders, running out of time and we{re considering shipping our bikes from the canal to San Francisco or Oakland or perhaps another CA port. Any info out there? If anyone is so inclined, as we are on the road an email would be greatly appreciated. (currently in Honduras)

TIA

Hi there

Assume since San Francisco is your home, that you are planning to ship by sea, as you won't need the bike at the other end for a few days.

A couple of possibilities, neither of which we have experience with, but both are large companies with offices in both Panama and California.

APL (http://www.apl.com) claims to be "one of the largest logistics and container transportation companies in the world". I have e-mailed them for info about shipments from Panama to California.

You can contact their Panama office at:

Panama City, Panama
APL de Panama S.A.
Calle 74 O, Altos De Bethania Panama Republica de Panama
Phone 011-507-236-3200
Fax 011-507-236-2065

Panalpina is also a global transport company which travellers have had experience with, but primarily air shipments, though they do sea shipping as well.

Panalpina S.A.
Los Andes No. 2
Ojo de Agua
Via Transístmica
Panama City
PANAMA

Phone: +507 2801111 or +507 2737066
Fax: +507 2737704

Note the above is their head office in Panama, they also have an office in Colon. See their website for other office contact details. www.panalpina.com

I have also e-mailed California Shipping, which ships vehicles, including motorcycles, from California through the Canal to Europe, to see if they can pick up cargo in Panama returning to California. I'll let you know as soon as I hear from them, but I thought I should give you the contact details in Panama so as not to hold you up, as some of these firms are slow responding to e-mail. Your best bet may be to contact their offices in Panama directly. Please let us know how you go.

gidday!

we might have a solution for one of you!

we are the three official ambassadors for unicef new zealand campaigning against poliomelitis around the world. obviously, we are travelling by motorcycles.

currently, we are in cartagena, colombia. in about 10-14 days we will arrive in panama-city.

one of us, juergen, broke his arm in ecuador a few months ago. however, this did not happen riding his bike but playing soccer!
thus, we had to sell on of our three bikes there. in panama we are meeting again and therefore, we will be short of one bike.

my mate mario is looking for a bike in panama to ride it to california from where he and i will have to return to our countries for a while. he is an excellent, experienced, defensive rider.

now, if you are interested in this solution there is two possibilities:
1. mario rides one of your bikes back to wherever you live in california. we will arrive there around mid-january 2002.
2. mario buys a bike of you (you could also buy it back of him later if you like)
either way you could save on the shipment. should you decide on solution no.1 we would need a letter verified by a notary - a question of an hour, cheap. we did the same with juergens bike in ecuador. - stating that mario is allowed to drive your bike back to california.

please mail your answer asap to:
dirk@2-mad.com

for credentials please visit our website: www.2-mad.com
there you will also find a letter from unicef new zealand confirming our status.

cheers, d

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
