Details of safety check for motorbikes in OZ

Can somebody tell me something about the safety checks in Oz on motorbikes? Who checks and what do they check. Noise, Lights or whatever?

I had one done in Freemantle and it was pretty similar to the UK mot test, like a tuv but not quite as rigorous.
It was carried out at the vehicle registration centre, your only problem if you have a German spec bike is a right dipping headlight if they spot it and care to make an issue of it.

It varies from state to state. I can tell you about NSW - others will need to chime in about the remaining states.

In NSW if you are registering it for the first time you will (I think) have to present it at a government centre (known as Road Traffic Authority or RTA) for them to check VIN number etc. At this they may give it a cursory or thorough check for compliance with Australian rules at a similar level to British MOT etc.

Annually bikes over 3 years old have to have a roadworthiness inspection colloquially referred to as the "pink slip" due to the colour of the form. This is done by most garages or bike shops. Nine times out of ten this involves a rather cursory inspection of the obvious eg lights, tread on tyre, no major oil leaks etc. and takes 5 minutes. Occasionally you'll meet somone more pedantic who will be thorough but this is very rare. Cost is around $25. After you get the pink slip you can register the vehicle for the coming year. The pink slip can be done anytime in the month before the registration renewal is due.

Last time I checked Australian Capital Territory system was similar, whilst Queensland and Victoria had the initial inspection but no annual inspections. Tasmania and Northern Territory and South Australia 've no knowledge of.

Hope this helps.

Victoria

Much the same in Victoria - the body that looks after it is a bit like the DVLA but called Vic Roads - VicRoads : VicRoads - nice people actually and they have offices all over the place where you can just drop in and ask silly questions.

You'll need to put it through a road-safety test (much like our MOT) in order to register it. If you have an EU bike I wouldn't worry beyond adding some reflectors to the side of your front wheels and (as has already been stated) re-align your headlamp.

I found the local Melbourne bike clubs really helpful when I was over there.
