Transport bike from Ireland to Ghana

I'm going to Ghana in October and going to stay for a year, possibly longer (partner has relocated there because of work).

I'm trying to find out what is the best option for me to get my bike into Ghana. By air or by sea? What costs will I have to be prepared for? Does anyone have experience with this?

I would also need some advise what kind of paperwork and fees I would be looking at when importing the bike.

Any advise is much appreciated.

Thanks
Steffi

Steffi,

Have you thought of riding it to Ghana? I did the ride a couple of years go and it was superb.

If you want to fly the bike there talk to people like James Cargo.

Good luck.

Cheers, I have sent them a message there a good while ago but no reply yet. My problem is that I am running out of time. I'm leaving Ireland on the 14th of October and will need my bike there as soon as possible as I'm otherwise stuck and supposed to be mobile to be doing volunteer work. Shipping it would take at least a month I suppose and I have not yet found a decent crowd that would sort this from Ireland. Sometimes it seems living in Ireland is living at the end of the world ...

Are you aware of any airlines that transport motorcycles from Ireland or the UK to Ghana?

Quick update:

Never got a reply of the James Cargo crowd.

Got quotes from the Maurice Ward Group in Shannon and Eastway Logistics in Limerick. In both cases air freight is done via Luxembourg by Cargolux. Went with Eastway Logistics, good, friendly contact and support. Could have been a bit more proactive in letting me know how they were getting on once the bike was in their hands but all in all nothing to complain about.

Glad to hear that it worked out. I'd be interested in hearing how things went on the Tema (I presume) end of things. Fees, time spent clearing customs, bribes, storage charges, what?

Thanks.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
