Boat from Italy/Greece/Turkey to Egypt

Hi,

I want to take a boat from Europe to Egypt and was wondering if someone has any tips or websites I can use for this. I would rather go from Greece or Turkey and I will be traveling by car.

Thanks

Sorry Jonathan - I don't think it's possible at the moment. The Visemar which used to sail from Venice to Alex is cancelled. The website says they may resume the service but having spoken to them a number of times they say not. The only other option I am aware of having done weeks of research is Grimaldi freighter cruises from Italy into Israel. This does stop at Greece and Turkey but there are no facilities to load/unload cars at either. It also stops at Alex but no embarkation/disembarkation permitted. But Israel will be a non starter for you if you are planning to go via Sudan for example. Options for now are overland via Syria - still probably possible but with obvious risks (check out the Middle east regional forum for info) or putting it into a container to Alex. Unfortunately Alex is a nightmare destination for a container (corruption/hasslewise).

Or you could go down the west coast - ferry to Morocco.

If you are planning to travel to southern Africa I would ship the car to somewhere like Walvis Bay Namibia and drive back - but of course that may not fit your plans.

Sorry to be so negative. It is a big headache for anyone wanting to drive to Africa from Europe overland at present.

thanks

Thanks for your help. Do you have any tips on websites or contacts which we could talk with to see if the ferrys start going again in a couple of months.

Sincerely,

Jonathan

Google Visemar - the website says they will resume the service in October 2011 but if you contact them they will tell you it is cancelled indefinitely. There is a long thread on the Hubb about the Venice to Alexandria ferry being cancelled - check this out. This has been the only ferry operating Europe to Egypt in recent years and apparently turned out to be unviable. A huge boat carrying only a few cars.

This thread also has info about shipping to/from Alex in a container.

Google Grimaldi Freighter for info on their lines - but as I said above with a car I'm afraid Italy to Israel is the only option.

You might also try Rosenfeld Shipping - but again this is to Israel.
