Chennai to Singapore, passenger boat?
 
Hi, were planning to continue eastwards from India around Christmas, and trying to find out about the options.

Met an overlander with 4x4, who's heading to Vietnam, and said he's going to use, (and that there actually is!) a regular boat between Chennai to Singapore, and that it would sail about every 10 days. He specifically said that it is a passenger-ferry, so no need to crate the bike, etc.

A quick google-search seems to know nothing about this, and it is a long route these days for a passenger-boat, was myself under the impression that no such ferry routes exist anymore.

So Im wondering if this information is false, and its actually a cargo-boat with no passengers that he's referring to?

There seems to be a ferry service to Andaman&Nicobar Islands, but to get from there to Thailand/Malaysia/Singapore could be a problem?

I remember reading that there once was a ferry from Chennai to Penang, until the boat sank.

Thats the name of the ship that was on fire and sank in 19something....
too young to remember!
I beleive my great gandfather took that ship or similar service to migrate to Malaya.
