Central to South America - Share Container?

I am currently in Costa Rica, heading to Panama shortly.

I should be shipping to South America in 3-6 weeks.

I am travelling in a Volkswagen van (with a small trailer) so will need an entire 20' container, but if there is anyone out there looking to ship around this time, we could look at sharing the costs of a 40' container.

I can ship to either Colombia or Ecuador.

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin.

How much is the container from Panama to Colombia or Ecuador?. Probably I will do that next year. And who are you using as a forwarder?
Thanks

Gaston

Quick update:

I have a shipping container booked on the November 15 sailing from Panama to Cartegena.

Still have room if someone wants to share!

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi Kevin

How long does it take to reach Columbia and how much would it cost for a motorcycle?

Thanks

David

I'll be looking for some form of shipping right around then, but with the bike I hadn't considered a container. A few quick questions: How long will it take? How much would you ask for a (loaded) motorbike sharing your container?

Thanks.

Mark

Transit time to Cartagena is 1 day. Leave on the 15th, arrive on the 16th

The deadline for "stuffing" in the container is November 13, at noon. I will be loading on either the 11th or 12th.

If I move up to a 40' container, I would need to get $500 to cover the extra cost. May not be worth it for only one bike, but let me know if you are interested: hulagon-at-gmail-dot-com

Thanks for the reply. Do you need a larger container to add a single bike?

If you were able to give a specific, comprehensive description of what you're offering it might help scare up a few takers. I doubt anyone would mind if you extracted a reasonable handling fee from the deal, either; you've done the legwork and made the initial commitment. Try saying something like "If three bikes show up and pay deposits by November 11th we can get a larger container and ship them all for $350 apiece. If two bikes, $400 apiece." Or whatever.

There is a minor horde of motorcyclists descending on Panama at this instant, but coordinating them, like herding cats, might be quite a task. There've been more than a few discussions of the various means of transiting the gap, and all seem to be either expensive or problematic--or both. What you're describing doesn't seem out of line.

At least a few of us are staring morosely at the grey, damp and rain currently prevalent, and might need a bit of a nudge to get going in order to arrive in a week or less. Maybe provide the nudge and see if there are any takers.

Thanks again.

I do need an entire 20' container. Even a single bike would push me up to a 40'.

Here is a copy of an email I just sent to another group of bikers:

Graham:

Below is the information that I received from Seaboard Marine:

--------------------------------------------------------------------
We have a sailing from Cristobal port to Cartagena port on the 15th of November, 1 day transit time.

We can book you on that sailing.

Rates as follows:

From Cristobal port to Cartagena port

20' Dry Container
usd$600.00 basic ocean freight
usd$200.00 bunker
usd$ 50.00 BL
usd$300.00 Stuffing
usd$160.00 Unstuffing
-------------
usd$1,310.00 total.

40' Standard or High Cube Container
usd$900.00 basic ocean freight
usd$200.00 bunker
usd$ 50.00 Bill of Lading
usd$300.00 Stuffing
usd$160.00 Unstuffing
-------------
usd$1,610.00 total
---------------------------------------------------------------

I require an entire 20' container; moving up to a 40' would cost $300 more. I don't know if the Bunker, Lading, Stuffing, or Unstuffing charges would change as we add more users?

If we assume they don't change and add up these charges, the total is $710. Split this in half for the two groups ($355) plus the $300 for the larger container for an overall total $655.

Make it an even $700 for your group and this would save me $400 and would give you pretty cheap shipping (do you have 2 bikes or 4?).

Flights are around $200 per person at

AIRES - Las mejores ofertas en tiquetes aereos

You would need to hurry if you want to make this sailing. It is a day or two procedure to get approval to ship a vehicle out of the country and it would be nice to stuff the container on Thursday at the latest.

A little more info about shipping:

Let me know!

If more bikes wanted to come, it would be nice if I could recover a bit more of my cost. How many bikes would fit in a 20' space?

How is this for costs:

1 to 4 bikes: $700 total
5 or more bikes: $150 each

Let me know!

Thanks

I am hoping to finalize shipping details fairly soon, so if anyone is interested please let me know by sometime on Monday, November 9.

I'm travelling with 4 other bikes right now and we'll be in Panama in 3 weeks or so. Have you figured out what your tentative shipping date would be? We'd be very interested in sharing your container as there aren't any boats large enough to take all of our bikes and flying them is pretty damn expensive. PM me your email address and we can discuss the details. Thank.

CalgaryMcLean 9 Nov 2009 11:57

Sorry, my ship sails on November 15.

If you could organize a couple more bikes it might be practical to arrange your own 20' container for about $1,300 with sailings every week.

My contact at Seaboard Marine has been Eric Hansen, and so far (fingers crossed!), everything has gone smoothly.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks again for your offer and persistance. I hope it works out for you in some way, shape or form.

I´ve been distracted by wet weather and can no longer realistically make it on your schedule. It was a narrow miss (credit Hurricane Ida). But I´ll be looking for a camper with trailer somewhere down the road.

Safe journeys!

Mark
