Bike from California to Alaska

Hi,
does anyone have experience how to best ship a bike from CA to Alaska? I am in the S.F. bay area.

Plan so far: Get bike and myself up there, drive all the way back
Time: 2.5 weeks only |:-(

I so far tried Alaska Airlines. They only ship from Seattle, and they require lots of precaution such as cradle, purged gas tank, and what not.
My problem is that I have only 2.5 weeks, so driving up to Seattle is not really an option, I also would have a hard time preparing the bike for shipment up there.

Any ideas? Any hints about air, land, or sea transport are appreciated!

Thanks
Falk

Hi Falk

I just checked with Alaska Airlines Cargo office in Los Angeles (310-216-5919), and Jackie informed me that there is one daily non-stop flight from Los Angeles to Anchorage. Flight 109 leaves LA at 8:37 p.m., arrives in Anchorage at 1:05 a.m.

The stumbling block is that since Sep 11, Alaska Airlines Cargo is not accepting new customers directly. So, you will have to go through an agent. The SF office suggested Hellman or Geologistics as possible agents. Hellman Worldwide Logistics is well known and recommended by a number of our travellers. I have a name and contact number in their Los Angeles office to get you started:

Bang (pronounced Bonn) Nguyen
310-847-4600

Good luck, and let us know how you go.
