Bike frieght, do people get insurance?

When people ship bikes, for example from the UK to Argentina, do people get insurance cover for the bikes?

I'd be interested to know either way.

If people do, who do they get their insurance with?

Thanks for any help or advice.

Iain.

Also, has anyone ever had an actual need for getting shipping insurance,
eg:

1. Did the container fall overboard or something?
2. What are the chances of theft of say luggage items once the bike has been crated up until we see them again at the warehouse?
3. Should we lock our panniers before getting them crated or will the Argentinian customs take one look at our locked boxes and just crow-bar them open for the sake of it?

The main thing is that our bikes arrive in Buenos Aires, minor damage we can live with.

Cheers

Yes, definitely have insurance!

My bike travelled by sea in a container with 7 other bikes on the trip home to Australia from Canada, in August last year.

When we opened the container, everthing "looked" OK, until we went to move my R1200GS, the last bike loaded into the container. It was damaged! As were the next 3 bikes in from the doors.

It became apparent from the damage to all 4 bikes (all the centrestands, etc) that the container had been dropped onto one corner near the doors. But of course, no-one owned up to dropping it! Surprise, surprise!

Luckily we all had insurance (which had cost us about AUD$70 each for return shipping, organised by the shipping agent) as the damage to mine alone came to over $4,000, as it needed a new subframe, etc etc etc.

So yes - I would recommend that you DO have insurance during all shipments. I definitely will, for my future shipments!
