Big Problem Shipping the Bike from Ecuador to Spain.

Hi, fellows motorbikers from HU!

Im finishing a motorbike trip of 4 months crossing South America, which has been the best of my life! yes, great adventure but at the end...

Well, I shipped the bike from Guayaquil to Spain and when I tried to take it from the Barcelonas harbour, I discovered a non pleasant surprise...

They want me to pay an extra fee of 500USD for the transport, when I paid 900USD including all the costs in Ecuador and the freight.

I think they try to cheat me, and I would like to know if someone had some similar experience or know a way to react to this situation. Im asking for help, mates!

Thanks in advance!

Mikel

Hi,

Well i knwo they charge a big handeling fee at the Bremerhaven in Germany as well. Baying a bike in southamerica would have been the solution:

The fee is for handling in BCN or is it tied to the transport itself, as a increase in price? (so, who's asking for the 500 USD, the "transitario" in Barcelona?).

In the contract/conditions you signed, was there an INCOTERM written somewhere, 3 capital letters (FOB, for instance)? Those three letters indicate the conditions that apply, like paid or unpaid insurance/handling/duties/door to door transport, etc. It may be that they caught you there, the bike would be shipped to BCN, but only on the vessel, not beyond so anything beyond that point would be on your account...

If you didn't get the BL (Bill of Lading or Conocimiento de Embarque), you are in a weaker position (and I bet they kept it), since you will need it to get the goods (aka the bike), so they may force you to pay first and once done hand you the BL.

Check first the INCOTERM. Then contact the Asociación de Transitarios de Barcelona, they may be of help: http://www.ateia.com/

Good luck & buena suerte,

Esteban

The fee is reclaimed by the shipping company that transported the bike; there are 2 BL, one from Guayaquil to Callao and other from Callao (Perú) to Barcelona. (I have a copy of both, but in the beginning they gave me only the first).
The first one is prepaid and the second is the paid on board of 450USD.
Another company in Barcelona (IFS) is claiming for this 450USD payment, to pay the shipping company...
About the contract, is just a document of payment, a paper where it is written that I gave 900USD to cover the freight to Barcelona, taxes, harbour transport in Guayaquil. Think its not a common and normal contract... if you give me your email I can send you a copy.
I am contacting that "asociación de transitarios", thanks a lot!!

Look at the bottom of the B/L, in Freight & Charges and check if there is "Freight Collect" written somewhere or something similar. Google the sentence.

I haven't work in export for a VERY long time and my field was not logistics/transport, but I can give a try. I PM you, ok?

Esteban

EDIT: Private Message (PM) sent. Did you get it?
