Approx. crated size & weight of XT600??
 

Hello,

I'm investigating shipping options from Korea to USA/Canada. Would be most grateful if someone could give me a rough indication of the likely size and weight of a crated XT600. I don't have a clue. Is there a standard crate size that fits an XT? Is it cheaper to put two in one crate or each in its own crate? Any pointers would really help.

Would also really like to hear about any shipping companies or freight forwarders that could help. I've spoken to Wendy at AeroIntl but haven't had much luck otherwise.

Hi Al,
I put two Transalps in a heavy duty create and it came to 4 cubic meters. so you should be able to do the XTs for the same or slightly less.
Take the front wheels out and we had to take one pannier off each bike, but included all the riding gear. Don´t skimp on the strength of the create for sea shipment as they can have a hard time and weight is not an issue.

For air frieght it will be costed by volumetric weight, and you can get away with a lighter duty create.

For airfreight comparison, I got an Africa Twin down to 313kgs volumetric weight (which is cubic volume in litres divided by six to give you "kilograms"). That was marginally less than it (and luggage etc) weighed, so I paid the 318 actual kilograms.

Fully built, without a pallet, an AT with a pannier each side is
240cm x 110cm x 140cm high = 616 volumetric kg.

I took the panniers off, the front wheel out, the handlebars off and the top fairing off. The mirrors ended up in a pannier. See photo below... All strapped down and including the pallet, it was 201cm x 85cm x 110cm = 313kg. Pictured here at the freight forwarder's facility near Cape Town International.

Note that I palletised it, it wasn't crated - to save on more real weight, and because I figured
a) it had already taken a beating across Africa and some more scratches wouldn't hurt, and
b) the handlers would be able to see what they were loading.
