Anchorage to Russia // Vanvcouver - South Korea - Russia

Hi All

I am a British chap living in New York, that is starting to plan his long way home, starting in April of next year. I am planning then ship my bike from (hopefully) Anchorage directly to Russia.

I have been in contact with Air Russia and found that in 2012 they offer a route from Anchorage to Petropavlovsk during 12th July to 13th September 2012.

There is no schedule yet for 2013, but her response was as follows 'Yakutia Airlines plans to operate next year 2013, but the schedule is not confirmed yet.'

I have been added to her distribution list so when they do release a schedule I will let everyone know ASAP

If anyone else is planning on doing a similar trip and time frame, please reply and we can pool resources

Love and punches

Paul

Update

Yakutia Airlines inaugurated cargo service last week on its Alaska-Kamchatka route by delivering a critical item - a replacement windshield for a Cessna Citation Mustang. The light jet was on an around-the-world trip when it incurred damage to its windshield and was left grounded at the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky airport. Logistics company BDP International routed the crated windshield from Cessna's Wichita, Kansas plant to Yakutia Air's ground and cargo handler in Anchorage, Pegasus Aviation Services, which successfully loaded it on last week's flight.

Yakutia Airlines is accepting cargo for Thursday departures from Anchorage through September 13. Contact AirRussia.US to reserve space for your cargo. At this time, the cargo service only operates westbound, from Anchorage to Kamchatka.

This all sounds very encouraging. Thanks for the info.

Most people seem to want to ride the other way, west to east, so the obvious question is - if they only operate one way, how did the planes get to the start? Fly empty?

Kamchatka is indeed Russia but it is an isolated peninsular which can only be reached and left by sea or air. So further flights or boat trips are required before really setting out across the country.

Hey Paulemery! I'm out of Washington D.C. and are planning the same trip as you next year. I too am looking at the different ways to get the bike from the US or Canada to either South Korea and then Russia or directly to Russia. If you come across and good info let me know.

We shipped two bikes from Seattle to Vladivostok last July (2011) by container. If you can get 6 or 7 bikes in one load it can be very cost effective. We used Bob Erion and his very able colleague, James Pedersen at Radiant, 405 114th Avenue SE, Third Floor • Bellevue, WA 98004 • www.radiantdelivers.com tel.+1.425.462.1094 ext 514

The shipping should take about 3 weeks but, beware, things can go wrong - if you have a spare half hour read the June 2011 section of my blog (from 9th June onwards). Start here and move forward using "newer posts" at the foot of each posting Round the World in 80 Ways: Air China - International Date Line

bier I'm liking this thread.

From the collective's experience, is it better to ride West to East or East to West across Russian, Mog and Stans?

I want to ride the tough Russian sections in the best low water season but also have a good chance at passing through the rest of the route to Europe without getting stopped by the snow seasons in the high country parts.

We (that's me and my riding buddy Bushman) rode east to west last year from the UK. We shippred to Baltimore and then rode 19 US states before shipping our bikes to Vladivostok from Seattle (we flew to Vlad via Bejing from Vancouver to meet the bikes)

The reason we did the ride east to west was not scientific.... my pal Bushman wanted to be able to get to the end of the journey and ride up to the front door of his house. If we had gone east then our journey would have finished in the USA at some port on the east coast and we would have been picking our bikes up from Southampton 3 weeks later - a bit of an anti-climax. So Bushman got his dream and it was a great trip. We left the UK in April and had good weather for almost all the journey and we arrived home 5 months later.

We did the trip on thumping great 2007 model 1200GS's - no problems, no punctures, no issues at all.
