alternative route out of Egypt to Europe

Hi There,

Just looking for alternatives to get home from Egypt.
As the ferry from Egypt to Italy is cancelled, we are wondering if there is a ferry to Tunesia or if anyone recently went overland via Libya. Ferries from Israel are also suspended....

Hoping to hear all the good ideas from you,

cheers Els

We'll piggy-back your thread here because we were about to ask the exact same question.

I know from already looking and following other posts that freight with RoRo to/from Alexandria old port is an option.

Perhaps not the best suggestion you'll get, but I shipped my bike from Israel (Heifa) to Greece with Salamis (Offices in Heifa) in January this year. You're not allowed to accompany iit, but you are allowed to drive onto and off the ship yourself (If you're there at the right time). Flights from Tel Aviv to Athens are quite cheap. If you fly El Al be prepared for a lot of hassles.

From Greece the ferries to Italy are cheap and frequent

Not that many options; RoRo or a container

Hola Chica,

I've just checked again the sailing schedule for RoRo from Grimaldi EuroMed service Euro Med , it seems they have not yet uploaded the updated file to their website. I sent a request to Marina Shipping hoping to get an answer soon, they probably get the sailing dates from that website as well..

If RoRo is not an option at the moment, I'd definitely opt for the container option, a container to Europe from Egypt isn't that expensive although one has to be clear in advance about arriving dock handing fees.

Alternatively the bikes could be parked in Cairo and/or Alexandria for a few months until the ferry resumes operations, if it does. I trust HUBBers can help here, you can lean on me for sure. Worst case scenario you could also sell the bikes in Egypt, I trust they would go fast.

Pls drop me a line if you arrived in Egypt already.

Hi Squire,

We're still at JJ's in Nairobi, having the third malaria-victim now.....
Probably leave in a few days now, but still want to be home beginning a september. We're getting some quotes now on shipping/flying to Marocco as it might be cheaper within the continent and from there it's an easy drive home.
Keep you posted if we find the solution :thumbup1:

cheers Els

ps how was the lake turkana and the drought/hunger?

Airlifting Nairobi - Casablanca is a good idea

Sorry to hear about another case of malaria, let's hope for a a quick recovery without complications. I have friends in Nairobi where you could possibly park the bikes safely should you need medevac rapidly, if you don't also fly the bikes out at the same time.

Back to "Out of Africa" options, Nairobi - Casa is a good option, although I actually had lousy service with Royal Air Maroc (RAM) getting a quote for cargo service last year when I wanted to ship my KTM from Cairo.

Alternatively, flying the bikes to UK on Kenya Airways Cargo (KAC) then ride to the Netherlands could also be an option in view of possible medical complications. I imported stuff from Kenya last year and airlifted everything on KAC at a very decent price. I could pass on the contacts of the custom broker should you need that.

If the option of making it to Egypt remains on the list of possibilities, with all its complications and costs, be aware that elections previously planned to be held in September in Egypt are said to be postponed to October or November, which would possibly also delay ferry services between Alexandria and Venice.

In any case do bear in mind Ramadan (August this year) and the heat factor driving North to the continental Coast. Far from ideal for sound and safe recovery

Parking space available still. Be well, stay safe in Nairobi. /C

back in nairobi

Hi Squire,

Thanks for your reply.

We headed for the Lake Turkana route and just before Maralal one of the old Tenérès broke down. Seems we're really stuck in Kenia doh
Took the whole engine apart but couldn't fix the problem, so we're back at JJ's and it seems we can fix the bike here as chris has the right parts...

Anyway, we're still heading for Egypt, taking the Moyale route if the bike is fixed. We didn't get much response on our shipping questions till now so the same question stays here.....

cheers Els
