mmm

having had a further browse round this site and a few others it seems to me that you might as well just fly out there and buy a second hand whatever and get going...

something wrong in my thinking?

...

let's face it...the only cool way to do SA is on a locally bought Honda 90/CB200 fixed as you go along...

I'll send you some pics. I just hope it's a better machine than the one I saw in Lima last year...OMG!!!

... Dakar Motos will give you good advice on buying locally ( dakarmotos dot com ) They can also help you retrieve your bike from the airport, or dock.

You can buy basic riding gear here pretty reasonably.

... James Cargo is UK based air freight company ( jamescargo dot co dot uk ). You'll find contacts for other frieght agents with a simple google search.

... 3 Week boat trip if it takes your fancy, the Grimaldi

... Buy local 3rd party insurance $20 per month etc, etc Plenty of threads you can search here too.

... Dakar Motos are your best starting point though.

Not exact answer to your question, but a brit I was riding with down in Argentina shipped his F650GS from BA to Frankfurt, and rode home to Brighton. His air shipping pretty much all inclusive was around $1500 dollars with Lufthansa. The other guy paid $3500 for same flight, but he was on the mother of all sidecars...

Also, about the buying there, it will depend on what you want to ride. Bikes are pretty much as a rule of thumb, about twice as much as those in europe or US.
