use google doc

Hi

I've been meaning to save all my document such as passport, driving license, credit cards, and mc papers online at gooles doc. So I can reach them wherever I am in the world.

this if my other would be stolen or off any reason needs to share some of them to any at home.

Is it a good idea?
are they safe there?
would not want anyone but yes, get access to them.

Google Docs is awesome

I've been using Google Docs now for 5 years and I've never had a problem with security, although that was at first one of my major concerns. The main reason I think it is so damn good is for remote managment. Also you don't need to download a document to work on it so there is little risk of getting viruses when working on dodgey computers in far-away lands. You can share with multiple people, so if you have scanned a version of your important info, ie. Travel Insurance, then anyone else you have specified can access the doucments as well.

We have all our backed up documents as well as trip planning and a bunch of other stuff too.

Would highly recommend Google docs to anyone going travelling, from 2 weeks to 2 years or more!

yep google docs is great. I also give a close relative access at home and leave a printed folder of all copies for them just in case.

Another option is to put the docs on your camera memory card, as this will most likely be with you at all times, and can be used when there is no internet.

One word of warning about google mail and docs, in Iran, without a VPN I have not been able to access, and in China, google can do down with no notice for a day or two. So don't totally rely on it.

for google docs, you have to have an internet connection. without an internet connection you can't access to your documents. I am not sure if you could reach to the internet anywhere in the 3rd world countries. Also, dial-up connection might take too much time to write/edit your documents.

there is another thing which i can suggest you: dropbox (www.dropbox.com)

dropbox creates a folder on you computer and whatever you put this folder it synchronize this folder on your web space on www.dropbox.com. So, you can reach your documents wherever you are. If you are carrying a computer, you do not need to have an internet connection. If you alter the documents it immediately synchronize it whenever you have an internet connection.

This is possible with Google Docs as well

Well, they say you learn something new everyday.
And I can now confirm this as I've learnt about google docs today.
Never heard of it before although I use google all the time.
What a good idea, just set it up.
Excellent.
Thanks for posting this, most appreciated.

Another security step for google docs

I have a few gmail email address. My everyday email address is my name, another is my name with "info" behind it. I store all my google docs, important information on the second user name and password. (This is also where I keep my back up bank info) I also NEVER send any emails from this account, I just use it to store information. This way it is never used anywhere out in the internet, etc. I feel this is just one more step of security that is free.
